Overview
Mazda's compact, sporty, front-wheel-drive MAZDA3 was available in both sedan and hatchback (wagon) versions for 2006. Entry-level models received a small bump in power, while a new 5-speed automatic was available as an option on higher-end models. In addition, new Grand Touring trim packages were added to the MAZDA3 lineup.
Standard power for the MAZDA3 i trim packages was a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, which received variable valve timing for 2006, bumping horsepower to 150 (from 178 hp the previous year).
The higher-end s trim packages received a 160-horsepower, 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine. A 5-speed manual was standard across the line, while a 4-speed automatic was optional for the i trim packages and a new 5-speed automatic was an option for s versions.
The list of standard features for the MAZDA3 was extensive and included air conditioning, dual airbags, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, CD player, 4-wheel independent suspension and steering-wheel mounted audio controls. The s trim packages added power windows, power door locks and a leather-trimmed steering wheel, while the Grand Touring packages added leather seats and a trip computer, among other features.
Drivers like the MAZDA3's handling, comfort, styling and roominess (for a small car), as well as its long list of features. The air conditioning was considered one of the car's weak spots.

This Mazda has been our reliable companion since my Sentra was totaled. I bought it because it was the most stylish, best performing car I could afford brand new. After about 55,000 miles, the only reliability issues I've had were minor annoyances related to my own modifications. Mazdas are known for their sharp driving dynamics, and this car is no exception. My Mazda3 does great on twisty roads, especially after equipping Mazdaspeed sport springs and dampers and W rated Kuhmo tires. The way it shifts, steers, and brakes far exceeds the standard for base price sedans. And because of my custom exhaust, everyone knows I'm coming when they hear the signature "BWAAAAAAR!" The Mazda3's styling, inside and out, is also a cut above other small cars. Everyone who rides in it comments about how nice the interior is. My only two issues with it, (and I'm being really picky here) are the lack of power, and that it sometimes experiences wheel hop when accelerating from a stop on wet pavement. So if you can afford it, buy a Mazdaspped3! I drive it pretty hard and it still gets 26mpg and has never needed major repair. It's fun to drive and it still carries my family and our stuff. We love our Mazda3!

Lots of pickup for a small car. Handles very well, very sporty. Gas mileage can be good if you drive it reasonably. Interior only available in black when I bought it, so it gets a little warm in there. This car is very fun to drive. Would recommend to anyone looking for an inexpensive yet fun car.

The car handles really well, huge brakes, and real peppy. Something you wouldn't expect out of a 4cyl compact car. All for a better value than a Civic Si, and for more power check out the 263hp mazdaspeed3

This is a GREAT car. Awsome bang for the buck, great performance and handling. This car is truly where great gas mileage meets great car performance.
