Still in the celebratory mode, Ford adds some special edition GTs for the 2006 year to commemorate the original GT40's winning performance in the 1966, '68, and '69 Le Mans endurance races. The two-seater supercar coupe features a mid-mounted 5.4-liter, 550-hp DOHC V8 and six-speed manual, and sits on 18-inch and 19-inch alloy wheels. Low to the ground, but 18 inches longer than the original GT40, the 2006 Ford GT features more legroom, but only 1 cubic foot of trunk space. The interior is wrapped in leather, including the seats, console, dash, and wheel. Power features and a CD player are also included.

The outside of the 2006 Ford GT is adorned by hood and side scoops, a rear spoiler, and a white stripe down the roof and hood. Round xenon headlights give the nostalgic car a modern look. Aluminum body panels help reduce weight, and the hood and trunk open outwards, away from the car. New for 2006 is a Tungsten Silver package, which honors the first, second, and third place GT40 winners at the 1966 Le Mans race. This silver color proved popular in the revamped Mustang, so Ford decided to extend it to the GT. The Heritage edition pays tribute to the 1968 and 1969 winners with blue exterior paint and bright orange stripes.

The 2006 Ford GT is a very limited edition sports car, with less than 3,500 even produced. Its appeal is in its look and power, strong road grip, and heavy-duty Brembo brakes. Gas mileage, seat comfort, and the high price are detractions. Some owners wish the stripe was optional.
