Though the regular 2004 Subaru Impreza gets some minor appearance and suspension tweaks, the big news this year is the introduction of the Impreza WRX STi, a true street racer with the garish looks to match. The STi builds on the rally-inspired WRX (which built on the performance RS) and offers a heart-pounding 300-hp with its 2.5-liter turbocharged H4 engine and 6-speed manual. At 0-60 in less than five seconds, that's not bad for a four-door sedan. It isn't shy either, with a large dual-plane rear wing, chin spoiler, giant hood scoop, and 17-inch wheels in either gold or silver.

The 2004 Impreza WRX STi features stronger Brembo brakes and a stiffer suspension than the WRX. It also sits a bit lower and comes with ground effects. Sport seats with bolsters keep you snug when taking curves. Though it comes with AWD, like the other Imprezas, torque split is 35/65 standard, which automatically adjusts according to road conditions. Standard features are kept to a minimum to keep the car light for better performance. As such, there is no sound system(CD player optional). Because it's still an Impreza sedan, trunk room is fairly large for a compact, but there is no pass-through to the rear seat.

But who's driving this car for practical reasons? Overwhelmingly, owners love the turbo power and immediate acceleration with the 2004 Impreza WRX STi. They say it really comes into its own on the highway, with tight cornering and expert handling around curves. City driving can feel a bit rough, and the rear seat is cramped for adults. The AWD makes the racy STi versatile in every climate.
