Probably the sportiest-looking minivan on the market, the 2002 Pontiac Montana combines elements of SUV performance and style with the storage and seating flexibility of a kid-friendly minivan. Further overlapping into the SUV realm, in 2002 the Montana gets a Versatrak all-wheel-drive option in the extended trims. The shorter wheelbase models have only front-wheel drive. All trims feature a 3.4-liter, 185-hp V6 and 4-speed automatic transmission, dual front and side airbags, daytime running lights, power windows, locks, and mirrors, remote entry, and OnStar. ABS brakes are standard on all but the Value trim. A new Thunder Sport package for extended models enhances the SUV comparisons by adding independent suspension, traction control, a rear spoiler, dual hood bulges, and 16-inch wheels, as well as leather seats. For those getting the MontanaVision DVD option, which is highly recommended by parents everywhere, a bigger screen and remote control now come with it. One of the highlighted features of the 2002 Montana is the dual sliding doors. A dual power option is available for the shorter models and standard on the extended. Seats can be folded or removed to store a variety of cargo and as many as eight passengers. The 2002 Montana tries to embody Pontiac's performance branding, by distancing itself as far from the traditional minivan image as it can get, without sacrificing its practicality. Its sporty looks are what attract owners, who also feel it gets good gas mileage, handles like a car, is quiet and smooth, and ideal for long car trips. Unfortunately, the 2002 Montana has many problems that are well-known but unaddressed by GM, such as a cracked intake manifold that leaks coolant, a problematic transmission, and the tendency for the power door to close while someone is in its path. Additional complaints focus on the cheap plastic interior parts and a need for more horsepower.
