The 1999 Nissan Frontier saw an important change, though it had just been redesigned the year before: the addition of an optional V6 engine in the KingCab models. Nissan had originally intended to offer the V6 in the redesigned Frontier, but it wasn't ready for 1998 and the automaker opted not to put off the new Frontier's release. The 1999 Frontier comes in three trims: the base model, the midrange XE, and the fully loaded SE. The three trims came in a variety of body styles, including an extended cab (KingCab), a short bed, 4WH, and a regular cab. All Frontiers came standard with a 2.4-liter, 143-horsepower four-cylinder engine that gets about 20/24 mpg in the standard cab and 18/21 for the extended cab. The KingCabs were available with a 3.4-liter, 170-horsepower V6, which got 15/19 mpg.
