Overview

A replacement for the Rabbit-based cabriolet, the 1995 Volkswagen Cabrio was based on the same platform as the Golf hatchback and the Jetta sedan. It was powered by a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder, 115-hp engine that was linked to a five-speed manual overdrive transmission. A four-speed automatic overdrive transmission was available as an option.
For 1995, dual airbags and anti-lock brakes were standard, as were power windows, power door locks, a cassette player, and airbags for the driver and passenger. Leather seats and air conditioning were available as options. Other features of the Cabrio included a soft top that was operated manually, a fixed roll bar, and a glass rear window with a defogger.
Overall, drivers were very pleased with the VW Cabrio, and were particularly impressed with its handling, roominess, and safety features. The roll bar, for instance, was considered an essential piece of equipment with regards to safety. The car's gas economy and relatively inexpensive cost to maintain were also appreciated by drivers. However, some noted that space was limited in the back seat, and that the Cabio should essentially be considered a two-seater coupe.

This car is highly underrated. Far too many see it as a typical girl car, but it's far more than that. Of course, it only has a four cylinder engine, which is the only way they came, but this particular one is also a Wolfsbeurg Edition and their convertible tops are practically indestuctable. Also, VW is the only company to use a glass back window in their convertables. The only problem I have, that is apparently common in this year of Cabrio is that the speedo needed to be replaced, but aside from that it's a wonderful car that just wants to run.

My car has 114,000 miles on it. The paint is original. Had to have the air conditioning coils replaced. Other than that I have not had to have any other work except for oil, filter, lights and timing belt changed

Fun to drive; very good gas mileage, good handling and reasonable in snow, expensive repairs; many VW dealers do not have experienced service technicians to properly service these older cars. Electrical system vulnerable to breakdowns. We are hanging on in lieu fo buying a new car hoping for car to stabilize its recent breakdown history. Sent away on two occasions to used part companies for cruise control module. Both "tested parts" failed to fix cruise control problem. Finally spent >$700 to have one of the parts restored and now cruise works.
