Overview

There's only one way to describe the 1991 Volkswagen Corrado -- supercharged! That describes both the car's engine as well as its styling. By supercharging the '91 Corrado's 1.8-liter, four-cylinder, eight-valve engine, VW is able to pump its horsepower all the way up to 158, making this car a pocket rocket. (The car's designation, the G60, actually refers to its engine, with the "G" referring to the supercharger.)
But the car's styling is supercharged as well (for an early '90s vehicle, at least), with a sleek and aggressive look that has made it popular with fans of aftermarket vehicles, who love to add their own improvements to the Corrado's trim. The vehicle's suspension was tightened up to give it a sporty feel, and the height lowered, so the the car handles well, especially in tight turns.
Standard features were fairly generous for an early '90s model, and included comfortable bucket seats, power brakes, power steering, leather trim on the steering wheel, cruise control, air conditioning, power door locks, and a rear spoiler. BBS wheels were added to the standard package for the '91 model year. Options included a four-speed automatic transmission (a five-speed manual was standard), a sunroof, leather seats, and anti-lock brakes.
The Corrado was popular with many drivers who noted that the car's styling tended to stand out among a sea of look-alikes. Its smooth handling and the aggressive nature of the supercharged engine were also cited by drivers as positive points. Drivers noted that repairs could be expensive, however.

The car was fantastic. The supercharged 4 cylinder had a bit of a lag when you punched the gas pedal but then you would feel the charger kick in and it would zoom. The rear spoiler was speed activated to raise at about 45 mph and retract around 25 mph. I had a yelllow one. It caught lots of attention. The seat were bucket style including the rear. It was hard for rear passengers to get in and out. The exhaust had a nice rumble sound. The trunk was rather smalll and useless. Overall, I had lots of fun driving this car.

I am absolutley smitten with the VW Corrado. It, in my opinion, is the perfect car. Fun to drive. Good on gas. Looks great. Is rare and unique. Has cool features only seen in higherend rides. Handles like a dream. Fairly comfortable. Decent performance. And I really could go on-and-on singing it's praises. As for my rankings. Obviously my overall impression is I love it. My '91 G60 is going to the grave with me. It's performance is great for it's class, and can even put some of today's sports coupes to shame. I did rank it very high for build quality and reliablity. And if you personally know me and my Corrado, you know it hasn't ran in years. So this high ranking is factoring in, that for the two years I was driving it as a daily driver, it never failed me. Not once. And even when the transmission started to go, I was able to drive it at slow speeds for months. But the real key to the high ranking is the build quality and materials used. The interior is full leather on mine, and it is some of the nicest leather I have seen. The features are beyond what you would expect from a '91 sport coupe also. Seat heaters, side mirror defrosters, speed activated spoiler, trip computer. My '99 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, could only wish it had these. As for the apperance. I absultley think the styling is top notch. With it not running now, I will just go stair at it in the garage and take in all it's great lines. That wedge look is awsome, with that line running from the front of the car, under the windows and ending back in the spoiler. The only thing I am not a huge fan of is some of the plastic pieces on the outside. Like the strip for the door ding protection, the door handles, the plastic around the outside mirrors, the grill, and the rear license plate mount. These bits would have looked better body colored, or at least with not as cheap looking plastic. I am not a fan or the U.S. spec amber front turn signals either. But that is an easy fix of just buying the Euro specs to replace them. And the headlight also didn't age well. But once again, the aftermarket "angel eye" type are what are going on mine once I get it running to remidey that. As for recomending to a friend. I wouldn't. Not because it is a bad car. But because if everyone drove one, why would it be so special. I love the fact that I have one of maybe 4 in my city. For that matter one of maybe about 15 in my state!
