Overview

The 1991 Land Cruiser saw a number of changes. This was the year it started to morph into the luxurious vehicle the Land Cruiser is today. Toyota offered more features, full-time four-wheel drive, and an optional third-row seat, which increased the seating capacity from five to eight. The Land Cruiser also grew larger, although the engine remained the same. The exterior also got subtle design changes, with flared fenders and a more modern, but still boxy, shape.
The 1991 Land Cruiser came in one trim level, a four-wheel-drive four-door SUV. The engine was a 4.0-liter, 155 horsepower six-cylinder. The only available transmission was a four-speed automatic. Fuel economy was pretty poor, at 12/14 mpg.
Drivers of the 1991 Land Cruiser love the SUV for its reliability. They like that the car is just as useful for grocery shopping as it is for off-road exploring. With typical Toyota longevity, many drivers say they have put hundreds of thousands of miles on their Land Cruisers with few trips to the shop. Most drivers do complain that the Land Cruiser is woefully underpowered and eats up gas very quickly.

I have a love/hate relationship with this SUV. It is one of the most capable and comfortable wagons Toyota ever made. It is already in its 20s and is still going strong. My only complaint about this era vehicle was the underpowered, gas guzzler petrol engine. Once I ditched the 3EFI motor for a diesel that remedied the fuel consumption problem. I was originally only getting 10-to-12 MPG, but now I'm getting 17-to-20 MPG depending on my driving. A big fuel savings in spite of the difference in fuel costs. I believe the FJ80 is an excellent platform for conversions. Their relatively inexpensive as used SUVs go, nearly indestructible, and have both good on and off road characteristics. Great for adventuring the country.

Well let's see... This thing is a BEAST, plain and simple. By no means is it fast, but it is not slow. I can easily cruise at 80 MPH on the freeway. The build quality is absolutely amazing, with 250,000 miles on the clock and STILL running strong. Offroad performance is stellar, even with open F/R diffs. However, the gas mileage isn't that great. I get about 10-11 MPG average. Overall this is an excellent vehicle. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an all-around tough 4x4, yet still wants to travel in style, and doesn't worry about gas.

Performance - Acceleration is great as is Braking and handling, but brakes can get a bit squeeky at times. Build Quality - Has had a few things repaired but it's just normal wear. Appearance - Interior is really good not cheap looking at all, and exterior styling is great. Cost of Ownership - Its great on fuel even though it is diesel. Fun Factor - It is great fun to drive on and off road.

So very functional, even my 5 year old grand children can open and fold up the seats. The dogs love it, a peach to clean, very comfortable driving, never lets me down.
