My first Grand Am was a 1986 with the 3.0 L V6. It was a great car to drive but not great for long trips with kids. Drove it to over 100,000 miles with few problems. Overheating was a problem if you were in stop and go traffic or idling for a long period of time. This was a problem only after about 90,000 miles. My present Grand Am is a 1988 and has the 2.3 L DOHC Quad 4 engine. On my first trip in this car I got 28 mpg. Pretty powerful for a 4 cyllinder and runs great at speeds of 65 to 75 mph. In 2013 all the Grand Ams of this style will be 25 years of age or older. Finding good examples of Grand Ams of this period will be hard to find.
