The 1988 Pontiac 6000 came in four trims. Base, LE, the recently introduced SE, and the sports performance STE. Base 6000s featured a 2.5-liter, 92-hp I4, while the LE and SE came standard with a 2.8-liter, 112-hp V6. The STE featured a high output, 140-hp 2.8 V6. All were paired with a 3-speed automatic, though a 4-speed auto and 5-speed manual were available.

The biggest change in the 1988 6000 is the introduction of an all-wheel drive STE model. This was paired with a brand new engine, a 3.1-liter V6, and apparently was the first use of the 3.1 in a production car. The STE AWD also had independent suspension. This STE would only be on the market for two years.

Both STEs were fast, with great performance and handling, say owners of a 1988 6000. Even the 2.8 V6 in the LE and SE was fun on the highway, though the 2.5 I4 was slow on hills and better for city driving. Owners say the 6000 is affordable in pricetag, fuel economy, and maintenance. It is also durable, saving them even more money on repairs. It has nice pickup, is a tank in the snow, and is versatile and comfortable inside. Complaints focus on the need for more horsepower, a wide turning ratio, and rust problems on the bottom of doors. Some owners would like bucket seats in the front and ABS standard on all trims.
