(12 reviews)1988 brought about a major restyling of the Temp/Topaz models, especially for the sedans. The so-called "second-generation" of these cars was quite a departure from the '84-'87 models. Many external changes, a new dash/interior, and an improved fuel injection system were among the changes. From a driving standpoint, the handling & acceleration won't take your breath away, but for an '80s compact, control is decent, and power is adequate (at least in the 5-speed-equipped models). Build quality is actually quite good; body margins, trim alignment, upholstery, and overall solidity were on par with anything in it's class. Of course, now the newest Tempos are 13 years old, and my '88, built in August of '87, is now 2 decades old. Still, if cared for, they can be solid, dependable cars. When they do break, they are relatively cheap & easy to repair.
right now, the car isnt in such great shape. performance is poor, handling sucks, and the appearance is pretty bad. I have a motor that i'm building, along with a transmissioin which will increase the performance dramatically. In about 2 years it should be a pretty nice car.
Don't really like fords anymore because of this car. Easiest care to work on, but falls apart easily. Bad MPG. The appearance isn't all that appealing either. The longer you own it, the more you have to work on it.
As my first car i love it!! small, reliable, cheap to run, and all together and ok car!! The seats are comfy, the car is roomy inside and everything is compact and its all easy to use!! I love my car!!
Performance. Sucks. It has no power and you have to flintstone it. It doesnt really have a "passing gear". It handels pretty good and the brakes could work more like a car than a truck. Build Quality. It has needed many repairs and still needs repairs. Its the never ending circle of life with Herbie. Appearance. For being an old car, i love it. It has great seats that are comfortable. It needs a new radio and a cd player in it. But its a good ole car. Cost of Ownership. Well other than a large amount of insurance because it doesnt have air bags and because it is so old. It has about 30k on it. But we have many many dollars put into the car to make it run. We think it gets anywhere between 12mpg to 30mpg. Fun Factor. Yes it is fun to drive. Its an adventure everytime because you never know what might fall off this time, or what tire might blow.
