Chevrolet introduced the Chevy Blazer SUV in 1983. Prior to that, the Chevrolet K-5 Blazer existed, but it was a large truck that eventually changed its name to Tahoe. In 1983, Chevrolet modified its S-10 pickup truck and gave it rear passenger seats and an enclosed rear space, modified it toward the sporty market segment, shrank it a little to give it a manageable size - and one of the first SUVs was born.
The Chevy Blazer's base model was just that - base transportation (vinyl seats, stark interior), but its Tahoe and Sports models progressed up the "fancy" ladder, adding cloth seats, nicer interior trim, and so on. In 1987, a single serpentine belt replaced separate belts for the power steering, alternator, and air conditioning (which was still an option, not standard). The 2.5-liter, 92-hp, 4-cylinder engine featured new cylinder heads and intake manifold for smoother operation, though it didn't gain power. A 6-cylinder, 4-liter, 173-hp engine was optional.
Speaking of options, Chevrolet came out with a "High Country" exterior paint option mid-year, with a shiny black top melting into gold color below, with gold body trim. Other options included air conditioning, an AM/FM stereo system, and a tilt steering wheel.
People who have owned '87 Chevy Blazers generally report that the truck is reliable, tough, and fearless, going anywhere the driver points it. Some say it has a rough, uncomfortable ride, has insufficient engine power for hills and towing, and has a serious rust problem.

(14 reviews)Started out as the family vacation vehicle. I inherited it after replacing a blown engine in high school. Can't do anything too crazy with it, but a good base for a later buildup into a capable hunting/trail rig.
Lifted, Loud, Beautiful, removable top. silver lake ready, stereo system, fast, gas hog, nice ass mickey thompson 35x17.5x15. rusty, expensive, maintenence hassle. money pit. very very fun to drive in the mud, swamp and sand!! even on the highway is great
Solid SUV for everything in its time. A lot of fun when you take the top off. A very capable off-roader, If you don't mind the MPG. It was built strong and almost nothing could hurt it, except the rock that I collided with. Living in a warmer climate the fun factor is high. Mine was carburated, I would highly suggest a fuel injected engine. There is loads of aftermarket support if you want to lift it or resore them.
I love my truck it is fun to drive and being an ex military truck is very tough. It has a tbi 350 and an 4 speed auto in it. Right now it has 31 inch tires on it but im hopeing to have 33's and a soft top on it soon. The only bad thing is the fuel milage that is about 10 miles to the gallon but i will suffer the gas milage for the fun this truck has to offer.
This truck was in really bad condition when I bought it. The frame was twisted, it had over 200k miles, 3 of the brakes didn't work, and only 2 cylinders were firing. I got the engine fixed, and the truck served me well.... until the brakes started on fire. VERY expensive to repair, so I ended up trashing it.
