Puzzled by the lack of popularity for its Golf, which was a big seller back in Europe, Volkswagen decided to turn the hatchback into a sedan and give it a propulsive name. It all began in 1980, with a choice of a 2-door coupe or 4-door sedan. In two trims, the base and GL, the 1980 Volkswagen Jetta featured a 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder, 78-hp engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission.
