It is not for everyone, but it checked all of the boxes for me. It is basically a slightly more useful version of the hot hatch. The extra cargo space is a plus over vehicles like the VW GTI. The taller profile allows older people with creaking joints easier ingress and egress. The all-wheel xdrive model is quite good in snow, so in Utah it is a good ski car. And it is shorter than the more usual sized SUVs making loading things on a roof rack easier. Add to that fun driving dynamics and this is a great car for me. On the other hand, if you need to haul people long distances in the back seat you probably want the current generation X1 or X3 or a competitor. If good feedback from the steering wheel feels heavy to you, you may want to look elsewhere (including the new X1 that lacks some road feel but still steers very precisely). One last thing, this generation has many of the BMW quirks that seem to be going away in the newer models. It takes some getting used to how to set the cruise control, for example, or how to navigate the menus on the iDrive tech.

Handles like an E46 3-series, but with a lot more power. This car is so much fun to drive. Typical BMW issues, but also BMW smooth power and sharp go-cart like handling. I’ve had both the xdrive35i and xdrive28i. The 28 has a far better 8-spd tranny and 2ltr turbo and I’ve seen up to 32mpg with plenty of power. The 35 has the sledgehammer power of the 3ltr N55 turbo, but a sluggish 6-spd tranny. Best I’ve seen is 28mpg. Each is good in their own way. I always thought they were great runabout cars, but last year I drove the 28 on a 1500 mile trip and it was fantastic. Seats didn’t cause fatigue or back pain, they are pretty firm. I’ve had 6 BMWs, 3s, 5s, , X1s, these X1s might be my favorite. Best years to get are 2013-2015. 2014-2015 are identical, and have a few more standard features.

Overall:

Fantastic Performance Vehicle — Each of the packages included in I use on a daily basis. The cold Weather Package, Premium Package, Technology Package, Navigation, etc all a must. Full Maintenance Warranty is a huge plus to owning a new BMW! Free car washes, oil changes and all routine maintenance. Sunroof is fantastic also.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Comfortable, sleek exterior and luxurious interior.

Cons: The auto start/stop in eco pro is disruptive

This car is like sitting on a church bench. It is so uncomfortable and the finish is also quite Puritan too.

2015 BMW X1 xDrive35i AWD Review
Laural101 says:
Good looking small compact SUV. Drove great, had enough power for my needs, hugged the road like a sport car, to a degree. Handled well. Unfortunately for me, its to small. Front seats not bad, similar to a small compact car. Detail, well I feel that has been cheated on, it does not feel or look like a luxury car/SUV inside. The back seat, well, not for most adults. I was able to get in and out of ok, but I do not recommend for a taller person. Back seat very small, bench seating and stiff. Not sure a large child seat would fit properly. Anyway, I do like the looks of this SUV, if in the market for small, good on gas, I would recommend.
