A Big Mercedes. The Choice Of Dictators And Heads Of State In Its Day — I liked everything. Im replacing it with a similar new Mercedes and not much is improved except status because of the newness of the S550. Ride is similar and the old 420sel is quieter inside. A/C radio pwr steering and brakes are about equal. Tire noise is a lot less in the 420sel. Paint and interior nicer (newer) in the S550 as well as navigation. Much better visibility out of the 420sel.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Its a true Mercedes luxury car

Cons: 12 MPG but worth it unless you are really poor and like to look poor

The Greatest S-class: W126 — The 420SEL was the model in between the flagship 560sel and the short-wheelbase 300SE. Identical in appearance to the 560SEL, heated seats were optional and unlike the 560, the rear seats are stationary. The powerplant is a robust 4.2 litre V8 that gets 18mpg+ average, almost 40% better than the heavier 560SEL. The longer wheelbase gives the car an extraordinary road presence and was one reason that the S-Class W126 was the most successful MBZ ever built. The choice of kings, popes and dictators - the w126 remains the greatest S-Class and the last of the hand-built Mercedes. production ended in 1991.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Possibly the perfect balance between the heavy gas guzzling 560sel and the less powerful 300SE. Absolutely gorgeous iconic w126 Series 2 example in rare Midnight Blue.

Cons: You tend to forget how large a car this is until you reach the handling limits :)

W126 420sel - Astonishing — Great car! Absolutely love it. Beaten on it every day as a first car and still holds up! Easy to get sideways, pulls hard when shifting its manumatic mode shifting. Braking is pretty good, handling is weak though. A+ build quality, everything works, and everything works right, and there isn't much to go wrong with such marksmanship of Mercedes Engineers. Outside looks nice, would look nicer with BBS mesh rims, and black is by far the best color to have it in. I have not seen another car pre-millenium with a nicer and more comfortable interior. Gas isn't bad if you're not stepping on it, and the only thing you can expect to go wrong is the transmission if you push it at its hottest (I've gone through 3), but if it starts locking up, buy some Seafoam Trans-Tune, add it to the trans-fluid, and drive it for about 100 miles, then drop it in reverse for a while too, then flush the system, and will work good as new after a few hundred miles. The car is an absolute blast to drive, friends have wanted to go from their 5 series to my 420 because of it's wow factor. LOVE IT!

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Great car for a daily beater since it's so comfortable, practical, and roomy; as well as an amazing pull. Just try to keep the pedal from the metal if you're wanting to be economical!

Cons: A lot of understeer, and if you're buying from the dealer prices will add up. You can find cheap OEM deals online on PartsGeek or on eBay.

Panzer — The 420SEL is a luxury class car built strong. The 4.2 liter V8 engine gave it a smooth start as well as a decent acceleration. This car has a long wheel base and can handle tight corners as though you are riding on a cloud.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Powerful, Strong Body, Luxirious ride, Can split a car in half with minor damage

Cons: gas guzzler, difficult to move around in tight spots

Clean — over all it is a great car, good for family. runs great fun to drive. looks great. it is a very solid car as all Mercedes are. The only Negative is the gas use which is high. I think it goes 15 mile per gallon.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Very Reliable.

Cons: Eats gas like its free.
