In its last year for this generation, the 2002 Kia Sportage STD adds more features, such as air conditioning to its standard equipment.  The personal compact SUV is available in rear-wheel drive, and seats four in two rows of seats.  A 2.0-liter, 130-hp DOHC I4 engine and 5-speed manual are the standard powertrain, but a 4-speed auto tran is optional.  In addition to air conditioning, the 2002 Sportage STD gets privacy glass, 15-inch alloy wheels, and an upgraded radio/cassette player.  Dual front and knee airbags and a driver's knee airbag are standard.

The 2002 Sportage STD is the base model for this economy SUV, yet it still features power windows, locks, and mirrors, a security system, a tachometer, intermittent wipers, and rear defrost all standard.  A rear window wiper is optional, as is a roof rack, to add to the cargo capability.  Rear seats do split-fold and the cargo holds 26 cubic feet with the seats up.  Other options include a CD player and CD changer, ABS brakes, a rear spoiler, cruise control, keyless entry, and special two-tone paint for the lower body cladding and roof rack.  Drivers like the smaller size of the 2002 Sportage STD, which makes it easy to maneuver in traffic, the low price, and overall style.  There are many repair issues, mostly with early brake wear, faulty power windows, and some transmission problems.  The 19/23 gas mileage is not a big favorite either.
