2005 Volvo V70 2.5T Summary

If youre looking for the combination of all-wheel drive and turbo power, you'll have to keep moving past the Volvo V70 2.5T, as it is no longer made in the AWD version as of this year (fear not theres still the T5).

The well-loved V70 received a slight makeover for 2005 with new headlight and taillight designs as well as changes to the chrome grille, center console, and windshield wipers. The 2.5Ts five-cylinder engine offers 208 horsepower; the Geartronic transmission comes only in automatic. You can expect 21 miles per gallon in the city and 30 on the highway.

Occupant safety remains the hallmark of the Volvo name, and many state-of-the-art safety features come as standard equipment. There are front and side-impact airbags as well as overhead curtain airbags, in addition to the Swedish makers trademark side-impact protection system (SIPS). The impressive WHIPS system causes the headrests to move rearward when the car is hit from behind, reducing or preventing whiplash injury.

Dynamic Stability Traction Control comes standard on the T5. This is an enhancement over the basic stability control feature in the 2.4 trim, as it also features Active Yaw Control, which aids with directional stability in a lateral skid. A multi-link rear suspension and front and rear anti-roll bars contribute to the wonderful handling; speed-sensitive steering is also standard.

New options include rear-park assist (an obstacle-detection that is a great thing for parents of little ones). The audio system also comes satellite radio-ready for those who are thinking of subscribing to such a service.

Drivers of the 2.5T loved its style and comfort along with the exceptional ride and handling. Others were impressed with its get-up-and-go. A few felt it was not as solid as older Volvos, although they still were in awe of the car.

The complaints for the 2005 V70 2.5T are about the same for any recent Volvo: somewhat cramped space in the backseat, and the high cost of maintenance. It is also recommended that the engine be allowed to idle a minute before shut-off after long drives to help prolong the life of the turbocharger. Some owners found this practice to be somewhat annoying.
