History of the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD
[Edit] The heavy duty (HD) versions of the light duty full-size pickups were introduced in 2001 for both the three-quarter ton (2500) and the one-ton (3500) models. The Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD can tow up to 12,000 pounds with its most powerful V8 engine, and a trailer hitch expands that capability to 15,000 pounds. The Silverado 3500HD is a monster, built for work, and it is the only Silverado to offer a choice of dual rear wheels. Bigger brakes and a stronger suspension distinguish the HD trucks from their lighter counterparts.
The Silverado 3500HD is entering its second generation in 2007. The previous model remained little changed over its lifespan, sporting three different V8 engines, rated at 300-hp, 310-hp, and 340-hp respectively. As a Work Truck, LS, or LT model, it came with either front-wheel or four-wheel-drive, and was available as a Regular, Crew, or Extended Cab. Each cab could be configured with a short 6.6-foot bed or longer 8-foot bed. Work Trucks were plain and had few interior features, but the LS and LT added power equipment, cruise control, power seats, and leather upholstery on the highest trim level.
Two rows of seats folded for more cargo space, and dual front airbags and ABS brakes were standard. The next generation Silverado 3500HD features a turbodiesel that delivers 360-hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, more storage compartments and overall interior space, and more standard equipment and safety features. The heavy duty Silverados boast segment-leading towing capacity, and the Silverado in general is the second-best selling full-size pickup after the Ford F-150.
