The 2008 Jeep Liberty is all-new from the ground up after the vehicle's first full redesign since its introduction in 2002. In revising the Liberty's exterior look, Jeep pulled design cues from its iconic past to create a somewhat retro though still contemporary look.
It all starts upfront with the Liberty's rugged grille, with its 7 slots framed by round headlights. The flared trapezoidal wheel openings help to give the Liberty its contemporary appearance.
One of the new Liberty's coolest features, though, is something you can't quite see unless you're looking down on it from above. It's an optional canvas canopy roof, which Jeep calls the Sky Slider. The roof retracts to a huge 30-by-60-inch opening, which Jeep says is the largest opening in its class and an industry first. The idea is to give occupants an open-top driving experience similar to what you might have enjoyed tooling around decades ago in an open-air Jeep, while still maintaining the safety features of a rigid cabin.
Another nice feature: The new Liberty is available with a choice of 4-wheel-drive systems, including Jeep's Command Trac part-time 4-wheel-drive system, which has been around for awhile, or the next-generation Select Trac II on-demand 4-wheel-drive system. The Liberty is also available with 2-wheel drive.
The Liberty comes in both Sport and Limited packages. The standard engine is a 220-horsepower, 3.7-liter V6 with a 6-speed manual transmission or an optional 4-speed automatic. Other options include a high-tech towing package with Trailer Sway Control.
Inside features include power windows, door locks and mirrors, as well as a fold-flat rear seat, remote keyless entry and an MP3 audio jack in the stereo system. A wide range of interior options is also available, including automatic temperature control, memory seats, remote start and a 6-disc CD/DVD audio system.

I went from a Jeep TJ in the 1990s to my Jeep Liberty in early 2000s and loved both. Im now back to a Jeep Sahara but I would like to go back to a 2 door Jeep instead of the larger 4 door. Im looking now other than maybe buying a Jag, ha ha! I will stay with Jeeps.Feb 10, 2024

The redesigned styling of the Liberty is what initially drew me to consider it when I was in the market. I've found the vehicle to be versatile and quite capable in DEEP snow. As a Paramedic it's imperative that I be able to get to work, the Liberty never let me down.
Mechanically I have no issues. Regular oil changes and routine maintenance is all that has been required. I just replaced my original tires at 74,589 miles...Not bad!Jul 15, 2014

For the most part the Jeep Liberty is just average on most accounts. Unforgettable in most areas and boring in the rest. Not bad, just not great either. The gas mileage was noticeably bad for such a small SUV, the cost of ownership was much higher than originally thought. The engine hardly felt adequate for getting the Jeep up to speed. The SkySlider roof was cool at first but broke down several times and left me in fear of opening it after a while. I'd say Jeep missed the mark, although i'm sure the Trail-Rated and more powerful models were more entertaining.Jun 26, 2014

I used to own an 01 XJ and sold it a year ago to get the new KK Liberty. It kind of reminded me of the XJ but in a larger package. First thing I noticed is how heavy it is compared to the XJ and the gas pedal is not synchorinized with the engine... its weird.. not like the XJ where you press the gas pedal and the response is instantenous, the whole car shakes because of its power... I did not find this in the new Libby. Ride quality is nice but sometimes its just too soft... maybe with some aftermarket shocks and a little lift this could be fixed. Interior space is much more friendlier and nicer than the old XJ. All in all I was pleased, but I do have one request for JEEP: make the next gen Liberty a 4.0 litre engine with around 270 hp so it can compete with the 4runner.Dec 29, 2009

I rented this vehicle while my 99 Cherokee was in the shop due to some
dumbass in a Beemer hitting it. I only had about $1500 in damage, he
probably had like $5000. This Jeep was a relatively basic Liberty, it had
all of the modern standard features like power windows, and doors. It

Nice new model of the old liberty, has some familiarities with the Dodge Nitro, but has its own particular look, nice to drive, easy to handle very short circle, cool car.
