[Edit] Modeled on the 1969 Camaro - the body style most valued by collectors - details of the 2009 Camaro are mostly still under wraps. "Spy" photos have been all over the web and in automotive magazines. They suggest Chevrolet will stick close to the concept car revealed at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. If you missed that, we hope you didn't miss the car in the 2007 movie, "Transformers," which some have called one long Camaro commercial.
Most recently car spies spotted a trailer full of Holden (GM's Australian subsidiary, which brought you the recently revived Pontiac GTO) test mules. One of them turned out to be a new Camaro test mule somewhere between Sweden and Denmark on the way to the Arctic Circle for cold-weather testing.
These intrepid car scouts have provided photos showing that the exterior remains close to that of the concept car. The interior takes strong cues from the early Camaros, with individual pods for the tach and speedometer. A four-gauge auxiliary pack (oil, battery, temp, and fuel) sits at the base of the center stack. Above the gauges sit the stereo interface and the HVAC controls. The steering wheel is bigger - probably to fit the air bag - with the classic Camaro logo in the center. Gauge faces have a vintage look, and a swath of silver trim runs across the dashboard top to the door panels. Retro style is mixed with state-of-the-art electronics in the form of a speedometer that switches to digital display when the high beams are engaged. The tach display will also show gear selection.
Chevrolet will offer the choice of a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission tied to an independent suspension. Sources claim 20-inch wheels. The European car spies noted Pirelli P-Zero rubber on the trailered mules, but that could be only for testing purposes.
One source claims that power will be generated by a 400-hp Corvette 6.0-liter LS2 V8, while others speculate a variety of engine options similar to the spread offered in the Mustang - perhaps two V6s and two V8s. No doubt there will be a high-performance version with some configuration drawn from the Corvette parts bin. There is little doubt among all sources that it will be fast.
The running-gear architecture will be General Motors' Zeta chassis, designed by Holden Australia, which is sharing the overall development with Detroit. This chassis design is also the basis of the 2008 Pontiac G8 sedan. The 2009 Camaro will be built in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, where the last Camaros were built. A convertible version is scheduled for 2010.
Let's hope Chevrolet gets it right this time and produces another performance classic - we know they can do it, just look at the Corvette. Our fingers are crossed.
