1988 Ford Ranger

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Tonight my truck was running kind of hot so
I pulled over and checked the water and it
looked fine, so I kept driving and pretty soon
I started losing power and the motor started
knocking like an overheated motor will do. I
raised the hood and there was smoke
coming from out of the oil fill tube...I let the
motor cool down a little bit and added 2
quarts of oil and it fired right up and I made
it home.. the problem is that now when I
check the oil,  the dipstick reads that it is
over-full!!  Should I add more oil?  I know
that 2 quarts is not enough and I know by
the way it was acting that it was out of oil
when it overheated.. what would cause this?
a bad fuel pump?  or the wrong dipstick?  or
a bad sensor ? please help, thanks

Drain the oil, change the filter and install the correct quantity of oil but fix the overheating problem because you dodged the bullet once, the second time may be fatal.

Any update on the issue? I have what seems like the same problem that just cropped up. If anyone can offer insight, I'd love to hear, because I've changed a number of parts and it runs fine for a day or two then does the same thing.

I changed the oil and the thermostat, but still having problems with overheating if I drive it too far...i think it may have a blown head gasket. Its for sale on Letgo right now, but if I cant sell it Im going to try Barr's head gasket sealer.
