1996 Chevy Suburban Fallout 4 won't go into
reverse what would cause that

Check your reverse solenoid in the valve body, could be stuck or off track. Start easy, replace the transmission fluid or flush, could have build up in the torque converter. Check your clutch. Check out this video, see if it helps at all. The issue could be a few things but I would start with the reverse solenoid first before ripping your truck apart. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12skIuk6rsE
