gear selection

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am having difficultly moving my gear selector from park to drive. In order for me to drive I have to press the release button. What could be causing this?.

if it is a automatic it has a switch on the break peddle,not sure where it is at,but it could be bad,you have to push the break peddle down to put it in gear.
