why does the abs light stay on

The ABS light will stay illuminated because the computer has detected a fault within the system, it could be that you have a wheel speed sensor at fault or a damaged or broken pick up ring. Your best bet is to have the fault codes read by a reputable garage who will diagnose the fault and quote you for the repair costs.
