The 2009 Jeep Patriot Sport is the base trim for this model and comes standard with a 2.4-liter, 172-horsepower, four-cylinder DOHC engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission that gets 21 city/25 highway mpg. The Sport’s performance is enhanced with Jeep’s Electronic Stability Program and Electronic Roll Mitigation system. The Sport's interior features a four-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with MP3 playback capability, cloth low-back bucket seats, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat, carpeted load floor, and a tilt steering column. The exterior features 16-inch styled steel wheels with P205/70R16 black sidewall all-season tires, antilock front disc/rear drum brakes, and a Sentry Key theft-deterrent system.

The 2009 Jeep Patriot Sport 4WD shares a drivetrain and all the basic features with the Sport 4X2 while adding Jeep’s Freedom-Drive I four-wheel-drive system and four-wheel antilock disc brakes. The 4WD system operates automatically while on-road, anticipating the need for more traction and then transferring power to the rear wheels as necessary and modulating those wheels accordingly for continued control while cornering.
