2008 Volvo XC90

Unlike Volvo's less-expensive XC70, this rugged crossover sees no major changes for the 2008 model year. An auto-dimming rearview mirror is now an across-the-board standard feature, and both V8 models receive some minor trim adjustments.

The XC90 has been praised since its introduction for a combination of interior luxury, seat comfort, safety systems, and its surprising fun-to-drive appeal for this type of vehicle. Notable safety features include full-length side-curtain airbags, front-seat side airbags, an anti-whiplash system, stability control, and a rollover sensor.

Despite a rather thorough overhaul for the 2007 model year, the XC90's look has lost its unique appeal, according to many expert reviewers. Neither of the XC engine options offers very strong fuel economy.

There are three trim levels for the 2008 XC90. The entry-level 3.2 is V6 powered and comes equipped with the basic luxuries, like wood interior trim, a power/memory driver seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a premium eight-speaker audio system with a CD/MP3 player. The V8 models gain third-row seating, leather upholstery, and a power seat for the passenger. The top-tier Sport is differentiated by unique exterior trim, a sport suspension, 19-inch wheels, and a sport steering wheel.

Buyers may choose from two XC engine options. The entry-level 3.2 houses a 3.2-liter V6, which generates 235 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. The two upper trims are powered by a 4.4-liter V8, making 311 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. Both the V6 and the V8 engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control. The V8 models will tow about 5,000 pounds.
