Cute may not be the first word that comes to mind in response to the word Volvo, but the S40 begs to differ. As the Swedish carmaker's smallest sedan, it certainly is cute, but a few other adjectives come first: safe, efficient, and upscale. While it's not a full-fledged luxury car, it won't disappoint even the pickiest driver in its comfort and included amenities. The 2006 S40 boasts an impressive list of standard features that enhance both safety and comfort for driver and passengers alike. On the safety side of things, included equipment runs the gamut from side-impact protective beams to anti-submarining seats designed to hold occupants in during a crash. The design of this vehicle has been thoroughly thought out, with its patented deformation zones using an appropriate variety of steel types, to shield its riders from harm as much as possible. Every S40 comes with air conditioning, power windows, power locks, a CD player, ABS, and traction control. Options include leather seats, seat heaters, rain-sensing windshield wipers, cabin air filter, and the Volvo Navigation System. Depending on which options you wish, you may have to buy a package. The options-package groupings were simplified for this model year.

I purchased a 2006 Volvo S40 as a first car for my son and was worth every penny spent. Though he eventually totaled the car it was worth it. The road handling and maneuverability were excellent. Mileage and gas were wonderful great vehicle all aroundOct 13, 2021

I've driven Honda's exclusively for more than 20 years. This is my first Volvo product and will not be the last. The car is well built, easy to maneuver, comfortable, and gets surprisingly good gas mileage for a car this size. The interior is well laid out and very quiet. Even though it's a 2006 model, the styling isn't dated and still draws positive attention wherever I go.Apr 30, 2015

I like how clean the car feels inside and out. The tinted front and rear windows are a nice touch too. Great fuel economy, handling and stopping. Silver color helps keep the car looking clean year round. Love this car!Apr 27, 2014

Extremely well-built and durable car. Handles like a nimble sports sedan should! High quality interior materials and very well thought out interior! Volvo made safety a TOP priority with everything that went into the S40. Comfy & supportive front seats, back seats a bit cramped though. Cool "IKEA designed (not really)" front center column, nice space in back of it to stash items. Reliable and decent on gas...only had to replace battery, tires, and cabin air filter...no real issues at all...rare thing to say about a European car.Jan 27, 2013

This has been one of my favorite cars, and it's remained interesting to
me for a longer period of time than I had expected. The design seems
fresh after all these years, and mine has held up very well - quality
materials look as good as they did when I purchased it. It's much more
fun to drive than comparable japanese or US sedans, yet isn't as

It's easy to handle, very well built, not enough leg room in the back when I drive,hand brake leaver could have been under the dashboard. boot aperture coulh have been a bit bigger, a sixth gear would be good. Overall:NOT BADAug 13, 2009

This car zips around traffic with ease. Build quality is the greatest from super stiff body shaft. Performance is incredible. Gets you from point A to point B in less time than predicted. Great gas mileage. Fun to drive? YES!Mar 06, 2009

Nice car, love it being a manual. Wish it were a little faster, but gets really good gas mileage. I have had it a year and very little complaints. I think its looks sexy and I'm hoping to get some rims for it and dress it up a little bit.Aug 22, 2008

This car is a great sedan, it has great quality and even has rear air vents, perfect for on those hot days... I didnt own this car but i only drove it for a lil bit. it was a fun car to drive. probably my least favorite thing about it was that it was white...Aug 12, 2008

This car is amazing. It's amazingly spacious for being a smaller car. I'm 6'7" and I sit as well in this S40 as I do in some mid to large size vehicles. The turbo in this car makes it one of the fastest cars in its class. Volvo always have the most comfortable seats, a big plus for anyone who likes to drive so you don't have to stop every so often to rest your bum. The whole point is to drive for as long as the tank takes you.May 15, 2008

I've had the car since new, its fun to drive but it understeers too much. I hope to correct that with a thicker rear stabilizer bar. Power is very good & engine likes to rev. Fuel economy is good too.Jan 02, 2008
