The Toyota 4Runner underwent a fairly comprehensive face lift for 2006. Visible exterior changes include new lead and tail lights, redesigned bumpers, a new grille, and some minor alterations to the body's lower half. Thicker windows have been added in an attempt to further reduce wind noise.
The SR5 trim was the base level for the twelve model 4Runner series.
All 4Runners were well-appointed for the price, and the base model came equipped with cruise control, a trip computer, keyless entry, a power driver's seat, automatic climate control and a CD player. A variety of options were available, including a sound system upgrade.
This model was the entry level 4Runner, using the smaller of the two engines to power a 4x2 drive train. The power plant was a 4.0 liter V-6, which pumped out 236 horsepower and 266 pound-feet or torque. A five speed automatic transmission was mated to both the V-6 and V-8. Fuel economy for the V-6 was 17/21 mpg.

Swapping the V-6 for the V-8 bumped the towing capacity from 5000 to 7300 pounds, while Fuel economy dropped to 15/19 mpg. All 2006 4Runners used a five speed automatic transmission.
For 2006, the entire 4Runner line was revamped, with most changes dealing with the exterior styling.
The bumpers and grille were redesigned, and new headlights and taillights were added. Thicker glass was included to help cut down wind noise.
The SR5 is the 4Runner's base level trim; one of three available styles for 2006. Each trim was available in four configurations. The SR5 models came equipped with a CD sound system, cruise control, keyless entry, full power accessories, and running boards.

There were two engines available for the 4Runner, and both were available with any trim and drive train combination.
This SR5 model was equipped with with a 4.0 liter V-6, supported by Variable Valve Timing + intelligence and mated to a five speed automatic transmission. This smaller engine provides 236 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, which is enough power to tow about 5000 pounds.
While the SR5 badge indicates a higher level on other Toyota models, it is considered the base for the upscale 4Runner. All models come standard with a CD audio system, keyless entry, cruise control, automatic climate control, running boards, and a power seat for the driver.

The Sport Edition is the mid-level 4Runner trim, finishing the already athletic-looking SUV with an even more sport-oriented appearance.
All 4runners come equipped with a CD audio system with MP3 player input, cruise control, full power accessories, keyless entry, and running boards. The Sport Edition upgrades to 17-inch wheels, color-coordinated side mirrors, a hood scoop, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The X-REAS cross-positioned shock system has also been added, to improve stability when cornering.
The Sport Edition is available in four variations, like both other trims, due to two interchangeable engine and drive train combinations. This model pairs the smaller engine with the rear-wheel 4x2 drive train. The 4.0 liter VVT-i V-6 generates 236 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are teamed with a five speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. This is the most fuel efficient 4Runner setup, with an EPA estimate of 17/21 mpg.

The 2006 model year brought a series of mid-generation styling alterations to the Toyota 4Runner lineup. All twelve models were fitted with new front and rear bumpers, projector beam headlights, and LED taillights. A new grille featured one thicker crossbar instead of the two thinner bars found on the previous models.
The new Sport Edition trim received a tube-style roof rack and step bars.
The Sport Edition is the middle point of the three trim levels, providing a unique sport-oriented appearance. This trim is set apart by larger 17-inch wheels, color-keyed side mirrors and a hood scoop. Inside, a power drivers seat has been added, along with special fabric and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. These special features are added to a well-equipped foundation, which includes full power accessories, keyless entry, a CD audio system, running boards, and cruise control.
The V-8 4x2 Sport Edition is perhaps the most road-worthy 4Runner model. The only mechanical difference on this trim is the X-REAS suspension system, which offers more sedan-like handling. The 4.7 liter V-8 provides 260 horsepower and 306 pound-feet of torque, sending the power to the rear wheels through a five speed automatic transmission. The V-8 models will tow 7300 pounds.

This is the most well-equipped SR5 4Runner, complete with four wheel drive and the potent V-8 power plant. SR5 is the lowest trim level in the 4Runner lineup, but a long list of standard features is included. The SR5 includes cruise control, keyless entry, a CD audio system, full power accessories, running boards, automatic climate control, and a trip computer.
For 2006, all 4Runners received several exterior styling revisions, which included a redesigned bumper, new grille, and different head and tail lamps.
On this specific model, the engine has been upgraded to a 4.7 liter DOHC V-8, which puts out 260 horsepower and 306 pound-feet of torque.
The VVT-i engine is teamed with a five speed automatic transmission, sending power to all four wheels. The V-8 towing capacity is a considerable increase over the V-6, at 7300 pounds. The fuel economy for models with this engine/drive train combination is the lowest of all 4Runners, at 15/18 mpg.

The new model grew in all dimensions, and a longer wheelbase also increased interior space. The 2006 model year brings mid-cycle exterior styling update.
The 2006 model got a new bumper with circular fog lamps and new headlights and LED tail lamps. Changes specific to the Sport Edition include a restyled smoked chrome grille, a roof rack, and tube steps.
The Sport Edition trim offers 4Runner shoppers an even more aggressive-looking variation, adding larger 17-inch wheels and a hood scoop. The Sport is also equipped with the X-REAS suspension system, which uses a cross-linked design to minimize the truck-like body roll of other models. All 4Runners come standard with cruise control, keyless entry, running boards, power windows and locks, and a CD sound system with an MP3 device input jack.
The smaller of the two available engines is a 4.0 liter DOHC V-6, churning out 236 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Both of the VVT-i engines use a five speed automatic transmission. Towing capacity for the V-6 is 5000 pounds, and fuel efficiency is estimated at 17/21 mpg.

The Sport Edition is the middle trim with respect to both price and equipment, but these models are also set apart by a more performance-focused presentation.
The 4Runner Sport Edition is differentiated by a hood scoop, 17-inch wheels, unique seat fabric, and the cross-linked X-REAS suspension system. X-REAS helps limit excess body roll through the tighter turns, creating a less SUV-like handling feel.
This model pairs the more powerful V-8 engine with the 4x4 drive train. Power is delivered to all four wheels through a five speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. The 2006 model year signified the mid-point of the 4Runner's fourth generation, as Toyota went back to the drawing board for a series of design updates. Before its 2006 release, the popular mid-size SUV was fitted with new front and rear bumpers, circular fog lamps, projector beam headlights, LED taillights, and a stronger-looking grille design.
The Limited trimmed 4Runners were the only models receive 18-inch wheels.
This model upgrades to a 4.7 liter DOHC V-8, which pumps out 260 horsepower and 306 pound-feet of torque. The V-8 models use the same electronically controlled five speed automatic transmission, which feeds the power to the rear wheels on this 4x2 version. Adding the V-8 bumps towing capacity from 5000 to 7300 pounds.
The Limited trim is Toyota's upscale finish, which is available on a variety of its car, SUV, and truck models. The 4Runner is presented as a semi-luxury SUV, and is already well-equipped with convenience features. All 4Runners get full power accessories, a CD audio system with an input for portable devices, keyless entry, and cruise control. Limited upgrades include illuminated running boards, dual zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and leather.

The 4.0 liter V-6 generates 236 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, and is mated to a five speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. The V-6 engine offers 17/21 mpg fuel efficiency, and 5000 pounds of towing capacity.
Along with a myriad of luxury features - like leather, heated seats, and dual zone climate control -the Limited is also available with a DVD-based navigation system and a rear seat DVD entertainment setup. This engine delivers 260 horsepower and 306 pound-feet of torque, and is teamed with an electronically controlled five speed automatic transmission. The V-8 models see a slight decrease in fuel economy down from 17/21 to 15/19 mpg, but towing capacity jumps from 5000 to 7300 pounds thanks to the extra torque.
Limited trim enhancements for the already well-appointed 4Runner include illuminated running boards, a memory function for the driver's seat, dual zone automatic climate control, leather, and heated front seats. Navigation with Bluetooth and a rear seat DVD entertainment system are optional on this model.
