The Toyota Tacoma has been fully redesigned for 2005, growing larger and more powerful. There are now thirteen variations of the pickup to choose from, achieved through a variety of cab size, engine, drive train, and bed length combinations.
This model houses Toyota's new four cylinder: a 2.7 liter DOHC engine, which is paired with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The engine will send 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels, and the 20/27 mpg fuel economy is the highest of any Tacoma. Towing capacity is 3500 pounds.
In addition to several standard configurations, Toyota also offers the PreRunner style. The PreRunner was introduced in 1998, as a unique new type of pickup, finished with the look of a capable 4x4. It is also equipped with the an trail-worthy suspension suspension system. However, all PreRunners are rear wheel drive 4x2s.
Here's why: as Toyota aims to build a truck for all possible buyers, they have discovered that some consumers only need a 4x2. Yet, the meek appearance of the old two-wheel drive Regular Cab models may have turned away many potential Tacoma buyers. So the PreRunner is designed to offer the look of an athletic 4x4, but it weighs less and gets better gas mileage.
The PreRunner finish can be applied to all cab sizes, but it has little impact on standard convenience features. The Regular Cab models come with a four speaker CD audio system, and all weather tires with a full size spare. Additional options like power windows and locks are available add-ons.
