The 2005 SL500 featured a number of changes that left drivers happy. Most notably, Mercedes-Benz added a 7 forward speed transmission that one reviewer said made the car "the finest performing Benz...I have owned."
But the car was not flawless. Other drivers felt accessories were too quick to malfunction and that there were more than the usual number of brake and transmission problems for a car in this price range.
But on the whole, the SL500 gets high marks. As it had for the previous two model years, the SL500 had a 302 horsepower V8 in 2005 that produced an astonishing 339 feet of torque.

How fast - and how perfect - is the 2005 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG? For one driver the only thing he could find to complain about was how easy it was to speed in the car, writing "the car wants to get up and go!"
With a 493 horsepower, super-charged V8 engine, speed will never be an issue. And neither will style ion this sports roadster modeled after the popular SL500 model.
But the difference between the SL55 AMG and the SL500 is monumental and comes down to performance and exclusivity. AMG makes high performance cars in limited quantities.

2005 marked the last model year that Mercedes-Benz built its SL600 with a 5.0 liter engine, upgrading to a 5.5 liter engine in 2006. But the 2005's engine was nothing to scoff at, pumping out 493 horses and 590 feet of torque.
And that extra power from the V12 engine comes in handy for a classic sports roadster that is nontraditionally heavy. The 2005 SL600 weighs in at two tons. The extra heft has its purpose, however: drivers note that the SL600 offers more comfort and passenger space than most cars in its class.
This isn't the car for moving day, with just 10.2 feet of cubic space for storage -- and significantly less when the top is down and the trunk is being used to store the classic hard top. Other space is sacrificed for safety: one driver counted two normal front air bags, two to protect the thorax and one for the driver's knees. A pop-up rollbar deploys when the vehicle senses a rollover.

Are 604 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque too much power for a two-door, sports roadster? The answer is no for anyone who has ever driven a 2005 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG.
That power comes from a 6.0-liter V-12 power plant. The AMG emblem adds exclusivity, making the SL65 the premier vehicle in the SL lineup - and making owners of the perfectly acceptable SL500 it is based on wish they had opted to double their purchase price so they could own an SL65 AMG as well.
SL600 owners, will be pleased to know their vehicles go from zero to 60 miles per hour in 0.2 seconds faster than the SL65 AMG's 3.8 second time. The deficiency, according to road testers, is inadequate traction in the more expensive SL65 AMG.
