The SL500 rocks.
Indeed, it does. Few cars can combine "guts on the open road" with all the luxury Mercedes-Benz is known for, but the 2004 SL500 did just that. There were no changes from the previous year to the engine, which remained the powerful, 302 horsepower V8.
There were, however, some problems. Some owners complained about failures with the convertible's top and none were pleased with a June 2004 recall for a brake problem.
But most were willing to overlook the cars flaws and focus on its performance. A recurring theme in user reviews touched on the car being "fun to drive."

Checking in at well over 4,000 pounds, critics say the 2004 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG is too heavy to be a true sports roadster. But the SL55 AMG can go from zero to 60 in about 4.4 seconds, making it faster than a Ferrari 550 Maranello, a 911 Carrera, or a Corvette.
And with its retractable top, soft leather seats and attention to comfort and detail, none of those other cars seems as fun to drive as the SL55 AMG, according to owners. It's also rarer, having been built as a limited edition of Mercedes' high-performance AMG division.
While it looks like the SL500 it was modeled on, the SL55 AMG is a car unto itself. One of the biggest raves was about the five-speed manual gear box "with nearly imperceptible shifts up or down."

Something strange happened when Mercedes-Benz introduced the 2004 SL600 in the fall of 2003. Automotive journalists started preferring the car to its souped up cousin, the SL65 AMG, dismissing the high performance AMG as a "track car" and opting for the V12 powered, SL600 which was better equipped for "Autobahn runs."
The SL600 drips torque - 590 feet of it, to be exact. The 500 horsepower engine is billed as being capable of pushing the sports roadster from zero to 60 in a mere 4.5 seconds. The car is heavy at 4,290 pounds, but that seems to give a sense of stability and security not usually found in its class.
Added safety features in the 2004 SL600 are abundant, from active body control to multiple airbags and a rollbar that deploys when the car senses a rollover - especially helpful when the classic hard top is down, as it should be.
