That V8 engine pumped out 275 horsepower, more than enough for first time luxury sedan drivers. The S430 is part of the S-class, the stately flagship vehicle for the Mercedes-Benz lineup.
The S430 came standard with a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual shift gate, traction/antiskid control, ABS, front and rear torso side airbags, and curtain side airbags in 2002.

With the lavish, 2002 Mercedes-Benz S500 "the car is the chauffeur." A powerful, 5 liter, 302 horsepower V8 is built to Mercedes' exacting standards and all the elegant touches you'd expect in a luxury sedan are present.
The car nearly drives itself, with a sophisticated navigation system and even a system that allowed the windshield wipers to automatically detect and adjust to the amount of precipitation. The systems work well, meaning technophobic drivers won;t have to worry about an "annoyance factor."
A summer/winter setting on the transmission adjusts traction accordingly and an airmatic system raises the S500 slightly for travel over rutted roads.

Built as a limited edition, 2002 did mark the last year before a major engine overhaul that pumped up performance in the 2003 model year. Still, the 2002 S55 AMG's hand-built 5.4-liter V8 pumped out 354 horsepower and 391 pounds-feet of torque.
The 2002 S55 AMG was also 100 pounds lighter than later models. The power plant propelled the car from zero to 60 in a mere 5.6 seconds.

More than any other luxury car maker, Mercedes is know for its technological prowess, installing dozens of systems that improve safety, comfort and performance. The 2002 S600 also ushered in the newest Mercedes engine, a 362 horsepower, 5.8 liter V12.
Other upgrades in 2002 included active suspension, high-polish 17-inch alloy wheels, and greater levels of wood and leather trim inside the cabin. And optional sport package sharpened styling and handling.
