Why it stands out
The 2022 Tesla Model Y stands out as a compact luxury crossover that blends EV practicality with Tesla’s familiar minimalist approach. It is based on the Tesla Model 3 and shares 70% to 75% of its parts, but its taller, hatchback-style body gives it more space and versatility than a sedan-shaped EV. That design helps explain why it became such a strong seller so quickly, and it also gives the Model Y a useful mix of everyday usability and modern styling.
For 2022, the Model Y’s appeal came from its generous standard equipment and strong performance. Standard features included 12-way power-adjustable seats, a 15-inch infotainment touchscreen that doubles as a gauge cluster, heated front and rear seats, reclining rear seats, a glass roof, four USB ports, video streaming capability, a top speed of 150 mph, and Tesla’s Autopilot system. It also offered generous cargo space with under-floor storage in the rear and a front trunk, while available features included larger wheels, a tow hitch with a 3,500-pound tow rating, Full Self-Driving capability, and Smart Summon. Buyers looking at this model year also get the benefit of Tesla’s long-range EV packaging, with the buying guide describing the Model Y as a used option with a long range and lots of standard features.
The tradeoffs are just as important. The buying guide notes that the Model Y lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, has a firm ride, and routes almost all controls through the touchscreen. Owner feedback in the summary echoes the strengths of the cabin and performance, especially the spacious interior, modern technology, smooth and quiet ride, and exceptional acceleration, while also pointing to the firmer suspension and higher prices as drawbacks.
