Why it stands out
The 2022 Tesla Model Y stands out as a compact luxury crossover that blends SUV practicality with Tesla’s familiar minimalist design. It is based on the Tesla Model 3 and shares 70% to 75% of its parts, but it is slightly longer, wider, and notably taller, with coupe-like styling and a rear hatch that adds versatility. That shape gives it a roomy feel, and the Model Y’s cargo space is a major strength thanks to under-floor storage in the rear and a front trunk.
For 2022, the Model Y’s appeal also came from its generous standard equipment and strong performance. Standard features included all-wheel drive, two electric motors, 12-way power-adjustable seats, a 15-inch infotainment touchscreen that doubles as a gauge cluster, heated front and rear seats, reclining rear seats, a glass roof, four USB ports, video streaming capability, a top speed of 150 mph, and Autopilot. The Long Range model was rated at about 326 miles of range in this period, while the Performance model was estimated at 291 to 315 miles depending on wheel size. Buyers also had access to available features such as larger wheels, a tow hitch with a 3,500-pound tow rating, Full Self-Driving capability, and Smart Summon.
The tradeoffs are worth noting. The Model Y lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and its ride is described as firm. It also routes almost all controls through the touchscreen, which may not suit every driver. Even so, for shoppers who want a used EV with strong acceleration, lots of standard features, and a practical cabin, the 2022 Tesla Model Y remains an appealing choice.
