Reviewed a 1992 Subaru 4 Dr STD 4WD Wagon on May 14, 2011
Great little economy car. Enough ground clearance to get through the snow and the 4WD has never left me stuck. The 1.8 leaves much to be desired in performance, but it gets the job done. It lacks in the appearance field to, but the wagon means I have room to cram all of my house projects in it without needing to fire up the big Yukon. All in all I love little cars like this. They get the job done and you don't have to worry too much about them.

I've got a touring wagon in Aus and a loyale here in Canada, both awesome little cars, built tough with character, never had any real problems with these cars, nothing i couldn't fix, very easy to work on, If well maintained just like any other car, then it should serve you very well into the future. A car that stands out from the rest, with it's 4wd on demand system and quirky instrument cluster layout, comfy chairs and smooth ride all wrapped into a family car. You can tell I'm a Subaru enthusiast....

Got this car for $200. Use it to run circles around SUVs when it snows. Not as refined as newer Subes, but I do appreciate this last incarnation of "old school Subaru", you know, where the spare tire is where it's supposed to be, under the hood! 5 Speed, push button 4 wheel drive (yes, it has a locking center differential, and yes it eats up snow covered hills like candy), ice cold air conditioning for summer. Oh, it's also got power windows, but needs cupholders.

Reviewed a 1990 Subaru Loyale on Jul 9, 2009
I am the third generation to drive my little red subaru....FREE! Gotta love that! I do not believe they make cars so well anymore-to last 20 years! 229,000 miles on rebuilt motor. Runs like a champ...rattles here and there, not that pretty without makeup (armorall) but reliable, sound, fun and inexpensive!

Though the name Loyale first appeared in 1990, the subcompact was actually a rebranded Subaru Leone, which first appeared in the U.S. in 1972. It was commonly referred to by its trim designations, known as the Subaru DL, GL, and RS. The Leone was a two-wheel or four-wheel drive wagon, sedan, coupe, and hatchback that later influenced the BRAT. In 1990, the Leone was renamed the Loyale in North America and came with either a 1.8-liter, 90-hp flat-4 engine or a turbo version at 115-hp. Both part-time and permanent all-wheel drive was available in both the wagon and sedan, making the Subaru Loyale a tough little car in the snow and bad weather. In 1991, the coupe was dropped and more power features and creature comforts were added to the sedan and wagon. By 1994, the Loyale came in a wagon only, a sister car to the larger and more powerful Legacy. It was replaced the following year by the Impreza sedan and wagon. The Subaru Loyale was durable, dependable, and delivered good all-wheel drive performance. Owners felts that these traits, plus the adequate gas mileage helped make this subcompact a good value choice.
