Is the Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the Subaru Forester is a strong used-car choice if you want a practical SUV with broad owner appeal and a long-running reputation for usefulness. The all-generations owner rating is 4.62/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the Forester for its spacious cabin, reliability, and all-wheel-drive confidence. Comfort, visibility, and everyday practicality also come up again and again, especially for families and drivers who value easy living with a crossover.
Expert reviews rate the 2019 and 2022 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs in the newer expert-reviewed years are familiar: performance can feel sluggish, the infotainment experience can be frustrating, and some versions lean into conservative styling rather than excitement.
35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Subaru Forester models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the Forester as dependable, spacious, and confidence-inspiring in bad weather. Expert reviews also reinforce its reputation for safety, practicality, and everyday usability.
- Owners rate the Subaru Forester between 4.33 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that condition can vary a lot by example, so a careful history check and pre-purchase inspection matter.

- Premium: a step up for buyers who want more comfort and convenience in a mainstream daily driver.
- Sport: adds a more expressive look and a sportier feel.
- Limited: brings a more upscale mix of features for shoppers who want extra refinement.
- Wilderness: the best fit if you want the most capable Forester, with a lifted suspension, all-terrain tires, extra body cladding, anodized copper accents, more underbody protection, increased ground clearance, improved approach, breakover, and departure angles, a full-size all-terrain spare tire, and standard Active Torque Split AWD with X-Mode Dual Mode traction settings.
- Touring: the top comfort-oriented trim, with the most premium presentation in the lineup.
What Subaru Forester do most buyers choose?
The Subaru Forester years with the most listings are 2025, 2024, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|

| 2024 | 5,378 | 36.1% |
| 2023 | 4,682 | 37% |
| 2026 | 4,245 | 36.9% |
| 2022 | 4,051 | 38.3% |
| 2019 | 3,327 | 35.3% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right trim, color, and price. They also sit close enough to the current generation to deliver the Forester’s core strengths while still offering used-car value.

The biggest drops are concentrated in the newer years, while the older years are changing more slowly. That pattern suggests you can find meaningful savings across much of the lineup without giving up the Forester’s core appeal.
The 2015, 2017, and 2014 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Subaru Forester now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −5.94% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −7.52%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 36.7% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 36.1%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $31,394. The Subaru Forester offers a roomy cabin and strong all-weather confidence that make it easy to live with every day.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The latest Forester Wilderness uses a normally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, and Subaru estimates 26 mpg in combined driving.
- Tech: The latest Forester Wilderness includes a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and an 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Safety: The latest Forester adds improved rear seatbelts to enhance occupant safety.
If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

The features on this crossover are never ending! The ride is as smooth as butter! The turbo engine makes you forget it's a V4! To find an eight year old Forester with under 41,000 miles was a blessing & I expect to have it for another 11 to 15 years!

Right number of features. Great value. Solid vehicle. Missing? Maybe extras like fancy media, swoopy dashboards and soft armrests. Perfect utility vehicle.

Reviewed a 2017 Subaru Forester on Apr 7, 2025
I fell in love with this car at first sight. I drove and considered a 2025 Forester to compare and could not move to 2025. The 2017 Forester is friendly, bright, wide visibility, you sit high in it, it has a smooth ride and has all the basics that you need. My particular pre-owned model had a quality I cannot describe that is probably due to the previous owner but it is a perfect car. I would not hesitate to buy at 2017 Forester, unless it is truly toward the end of its life.

Why it stands out
The 2024 Subaru Forester stands out as a compact SUV that leans hard into practicality, visibility, and all-weather confidence. Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive is standard, and the Forester’s reputation for reliability and value remains a major part of its appeal. It also offers a spacious interior and a large cargo area, which makes it especially attractive to buyers who want an easy-to-live-with family vehicle rather than something flashy.
For 2024, the Forester’s strengths are rooted in its balanced setup: a 2.5-liter boxer engine with 182 hp and 176 lb-ft works with a CVT, while standard EyeSight safety tech adds adaptive cruise control, Pre-Collision Braking, lane departure and sway warning, and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. Higher trims bring more comfort and convenience, including an eight-inch touchscreen on upper versions, a panoramic power moonroof, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and available blind-spot and rear cross-traffic features. The Sport trim adds a more aggressive look with dark trim and orange accents, while the Limited and Touring trims bring more upscale touches such as leather upholstery, a power rear gate, ventilated leather seats, a heated steering wheel, and a Harman Kardon sound system.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. The CVT can feel sluggish, and the latest generation does not offer a turbocharged engine option. Even so, the 2024 Subaru Forester remains appealing because it combines standard AWD, strong visibility, useful space, and a long-running reputation for durability in a package that is easy to recommend for everyday use.
