This car has surprisingly been the best used car I've ever owned. I bought it in the spring of 2008 when gas was starting to hit $4. It promised great gas mileage and it has never disappointed me in that area. I've maxed it at 38mpg on a state highway averaging 60mph. Just over 400 miles on the 12 gallon tank and there was still a little in there. Servicing(brakes, tires, etc.) has always been more than reasonable. You do want to be sure to rotate the tires front to back and never corner to corner. The rear wheels wear differently and can "chuck" over time if not swapped with front tires at least once a year. Not a big deal, but something to be aware of(and it will save your suspension). This car has great curves and a fantastic stance too. Be sure to roll with the headlights and fog lamps for maximum effect. This was the last year(2002) of the original company and the Tennessee built Saturns and you can tell a lot of pride went into it's construction. Awesome little coupe!

Saturn was GMs attempt at building a import competitor. They learned the Japanese way to design and build cars and handle workers. They were successful, and then threw it all away. The S-series was a great car in 1991, by 2001 is was still a good car, but had passed it's prime only being slightly revised over the years it was out gunned by its competitors. Still, what you got for you money was a good car, filled with that what made those early 90's Saturns so unique. You still got plastic body panels on a space frame. You still nimble steering and decent power. You got a great looking car that shrugs of the years and manages to still look relatively modern. And compared to the competition you got to keep a bit more money in you pocket. The S-series got heavier as the engines improved little. Towards the end of the model Saturn was being pulled into the GM family. I still view the car as superiors to any other GM small car at the time in every way except possibly the engine. The 1.9L LL0 design was ground breaking in terms of manufacturing. But the it's cousin the Ecotech, which was found in other small GM cars was a far better engine. S-series have never responded particularly well to modification. Again this is largely based on the LLO which is long stroked and basically a US only engine. With few markets to sell aftermarket performance parts in, The engine was not particularly attractive to performance companies. Still the S-series is a fun, well engineered car that costs little to get into. I was offered in high efficiency SOHC models and performance oriented DOHC optioned cars. You could also get it in Sedan, coupe and wagon configurations. With over 2 million made it is easy to find the one for you.

Very inexpensive to maintain. Easy to access most parts. GREAT fuel economy - 30ish around town 35 highway.

A wise man once said that you never forget your first. If that adage holds true, then the S-Series will hold a special place in the hearts of Saturn fans. This compact model debuted in late 1990 and enjoyed a healthy run through the decade and into the 21st century. In addition to providing domestic competition for the the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, the S-Series established Saturn's reputation as a solid alternative for budget-conscious consumers.
The series began with 3 sedans and a coupe in 1991. Saturn introduced the S-Series wagon in 1993 and kept the same general trim lineup until 1999, when it introduced the unique 3 door coupe. All trims used a 1.9 L I4 engine with either 100 or 124 hp. Sales began to flag in the late 1990's as consumers grew weary of the bland design and mediocre performance. As a result, Saturn ended production in 2002 and replaced the S-Series with the Ion the next year.
