Fun and reliable in its day, a car for the collector only now. Parts availability is non-existent. If you want one, hold out for the best example you can find. Definitely worth joining the owners groups online.

BEST CAR EVER! It handles like a dream even though its older than me. It runs like frikkin Usain Bolt. It has required a bit of maintenance, but not much over 22 years. And it has a turbo...it is the only car that I have driven and subsequently been thrown into the back of my seat.

My Merkur XR4ti is a blast to drive The XR4ti is an affordable German turbo car My manual 5 speed XR gets 24 MPG in daily driving and 28 - 30 on highway only trips. The entire family drives XR4ti amongst all of us we own 23 of them. We do our own mechanical work and this makes for a great hobby.

1985-1989 Merkur XR4Ti was a very good car, sporty, fast, well appointed and yes quirky looks. I loved it, just like the Saab 900 Turbos of the same era. Ford of Europe made a good car but Ford of USA did not understand how to market it. Its a shame they are not around but a good pre-owned one can be an exciting ride maybe for weekend use not an everyday driver.
