However, common complaints include outdated performance, weak acceleration, design flaws, and mechanical issues that some experienced. Reviewed a 1984 Ford Tempo on May 1, 2024
My 1984 F Tempo was built in March of 83. It had a 5 speed manual transmission. It did not have a timing belt. It had a timing gear that was internal to the engine. (Never had an issue w/timing.) This car had incredible torque! I could peel-out from a stand still & squeak the tires when I changed gears all the way to 5th! MY Tempo could flat out fly! (Well, almost. But you get the picture!) I had a recurring issue w/the TFI module going bad, but other than that, mechanically, it was a very dependable, low gas mileage car. I had this car for 13-14yrs. LOVED every minute of ownership.

Reviewed a 1988 Ford Tempo on Aug 11, 2007
1988 brought about a major restyling of the Temp/Topaz models, especially for the sedans. The so-called "second-generation" of these cars was quite a departure from the '84-'87 models. Many external changes, a new dash/interior, and an improved fuel injection system were among the changes. From a driving standpoint, the handling & acceleration won't take your breath away, but for an '80s compact, control is decent, and power is adequate (at least in the 5-speed-equipped models). Build quality is actually quite good; body margins, trim alignment, upholstery, and overall solidity were on par with anything in it's class. Of course, now the newest Tempos are 13 years old, and my '88, built in August of '87, is now 2 decades old. Still, if cared for, they can be solid, dependable cars. When they do break, they are relatively cheap & easy to repair.

Reviewed a 1989 Ford Tempo on Feb 17, 2011
I Got this car in my sophomore year. i drove an 85 eldorado for a few months and my sister totaled it. i bought a ford tempo for my tv and 50 bucks. BEST 50 BUCKS EVER SPENT. it had 200k miles and i drove it all the way to 500k. that took 3 years. i drove everywhere and anywhere i could. doing burnouts and racing the cooler kids in beamers and benzes. i spent 200 on the motor mounts 200 on tires and 300 on the timing belt. IN THE ENTIRE 3 YEARS. i scraped it up grinding on the freeway exits and running over cones but the frame and glass held out. i have to say it was the most fun ive ever had in a car. i drove it to its death but it kept on running. in my freshman year in college i rolled it, (despite the big displacment)and i had to scrap it but i DROVE IT TO THE SCRAP YARD. reliable runner. lasts forever
