Customers say
The Ford Explorer Sport Trac has generally impressed owners over the years with its comfort, spacious interiors, and versatile performance. Many drivers enjoy its towing capacity, making it a practical choice for various tasks. However, some common downsides include mediocre fuel economy and concerns about power options, particularly for towing. While it serves well as a blend of car and truck, not all owners feel it meets the needs for more demanding work and utility tasks.

This car is my favorite of the cars I have had because of my needs, and the performance I got. The truck was very very spacious inside, and could fit 5 people no problem. On top of that, the gadgets that were included were very nice, and fit the truck well. The engine purred, and was geared great to allow for great acceleration with good torque response. The bed was somewhat unnecessary for me, but I found good use for it with the hard top tonneu cover. Again, it was a loaded Ford for me, but I truly thought it was a fun balanced car. The most perfect for tailgaiting.

It's a truck. It's not really supposed to accelerate quickly, or turn sharply. And it doesn't. The brakes work well enough, although when it is wet, it has developed the habit of being very touchy when it comes to said brakes. Gas mileage is alright, better than an average truck of the same year. It's getting older now, and has developed some squeaks, and the drivers seat is pretty sunken in, but hey, its been around for 10 years now, so it has a right to, no? We've pulled a camper with it, and it did well. There were multiple recalls on stuff on it over the years, but none for a while. It has >110K miles on it and still runs like a champ. It has served it's purpose well, in that it has a bed for hauling, and a hitch, but also has a back seat that 2 large guys fit in with relative comfort. Additionally, it was short enough to still fit in a medium-small suburban garage. Plenty of anchor points placed all around the bed, which are very useful for tying cargo down. Very useful external code pad which, along with the automatic windows, didn't work for a while, but we had that fixed.

Overview
The Ford Explorer Sport Trac is a spinoff of the popular Explorer SUV. The Sport Trac combines the comfort of a sport-utility vehicle with the flexibility of a pickup, resulting in a new hybrid creature called a Sport Utility Truck.
The Explorer Sport Trac was designed to appeal to drivers who wanted comfort as well as ruggedness and versatility. Demand for the Sport Trac has always run slightly ahead of supply, so it appears that Ford has calculated its market well.
Launched in 2001 to great fanfare, the Explorer Sport Trac has been one of the models Ford used to introduce new safety features and styling touches.
