How much does the 2026 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 11.43% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 858 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series a good car?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series earns an 8/10 expert rating and is described as a luxury sedan that blends comfort, technology, and performance in a way that works well as a refined daily driver. The model scores 9/10 across Performance, Technology, and Safety.

That lines up with the car’s strengths: it is fun to drive, comfortable, and offers impressive technology. The 5 Series is also positioned as a broad-appeal premium midsize sedan, especially if you want a car that feels upscale without giving up driving enjoyment.

The trade-offs are worth noting. Its design can be polarizing, the digital voice assistant can have occasional quirks, and cargo space is limited. Those are the main compromises if you value style, voice-control polish, or practicality over the car’s core strengths.

With 34.0% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series reliable?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series is presented as a well-rounded luxury sedan with a comfort-first character, and its powertrain is described as smooth, civilized, and relatively fuel efficient for its performance level. The expert assessment also emphasizes that the car feels quiet and high-quality on the road, which supports the impression of a polished ownership experience.

For dependability, the performance write-up points to a powertrain that is effortless and refined rather than strained, and the cost-effectiveness notes add that the car includes three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance. That helps reduce early ownership friction and is a useful perk if you plan to keep the car through the first few years.

The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that the most desirable equipment and driving aids can add complexity, so you should expect a premium-car ownership experience rather than a simple one.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 BMW 5 Series?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 97.3% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

Even with strong clean-inventory coverage, you should still run a history report and verify that the car’s equipment matches the listing. A pre-purchase inspection is especially smart if you are considering a higher-spec example with more option packages, since those cars can carry more complexity. You should also pay close attention to interior condition, infotainment behavior, and wheel-and-tire wear if the car has larger performance-oriented equipment.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 540i test car shows how much the upper trim can add, including more expressive styling details, upgraded interior materials, and a more premium cabin presentation. The base trim is more likely to leave you without some of the richer visual and equipment touches that make the higher-spec car feel special.
• Powertrain: The 540i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six with mild-hybrid assistance, making it smooth, swift, and civilized. It also pairs with an eight-speed Sport automatic and standard AWD, while the base 530i uses rear-wheel drive.
• Safety package: The car includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance as part of an Assisted Driving system. The Driving Assistance Professional package adds steering-related lane-change support, evasive-maneuver support, an emergency stop system, and Highway Assistant with hands-free driving up to 85 mph.
• Infotainment: The BMW Curved Display includes a 12.3-inch configurable driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display, powered by BMW Operating System 8.5. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, along with wireless smartphone charging and OTA-capable connected services.
• Fuel efficiency: The 540i is rated at 28 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 26.5 mpg on a mixed route.

Which 2026 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series is offered in 7 trim levels: 530i, 540i, 550e, i5, i5 M60, M5, and M5 Touring.

Here's the short version:

• 530i: This is the entry point if you want the 5 Series experience with the least expensive gas model. It gives you the core luxury-sedan formula, but the 540i is the better-value choice if you want the stronger engine and more refined overall feel.
• 540i: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the turbo six, standard AWD, and a more polished driving experience. If you want the sweet spot between luxury and performance, this is the one to target.
• 550e: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid capability and the broader efficiency-focused powertrain mix in the lineup.
• i5: This is the all-electric route if you want to leave gas behind entirely.
• i5 M60: Pick this if you want the performance-oriented electric version.
• M5: This is the full performance model for buyers who want the most serious driving character in the lineup.
• M5 Touring: Choose this if you want the M5 performance formula in wagon form.

The 540i also benefits from the more advanced safety setup when equipped with the Driving Assistance Professional package, while the base car’s standard safety tech is more limited.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 BMW 5 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 858 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.43% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 97.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $58,016, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2026 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $58,016 sits slightly below last year's $65,503.

That decline suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can help you get into the car at a more attractive entry price. For a future seller, though, it also means you should expect some depreciation pressure if you buy at the current average and try to resell soon.

The good news is that the 5 Series still has strong appeal as a luxury sedan with broad capability, so well-equipped examples in good condition should remain easier to market than less desirable premium cars. If you buy carefully and avoid overpaying for options you do not need, you can reduce the sting of future depreciation.

Is the 2026 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2026 BMW 5 Series earns high marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, though it had not yet been tested enough at the time of publication to qualify for Top Safety Pick recognition.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety setup includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, which BMW groups into an Assisted Driving system. If you move up to the Driving Assistance Professional package, you also get steering-related lane-change support, evasive-maneuver support, an emergency stop system, and Highway Assistant with hands-free driving up to 85 mph.

One caveat is that Highway Assistant is part of an option package, so the most advanced hands-free capability is not standard. That means you should verify the exact safety equipment on any used listing before you buy.

Should I buy a 2026 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 97.3% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.43% compared with last year.
• The 2026 model year is described as virtually unchanged and still delivers the blend of luxury, technology, and performance that defines this generation.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current pricing, clean inventory, and the latest version of this generation’s tech-rich luxury-sedan formula, the 2026 is the one to focus on. If your priority is simply spending less, a nearby model year may still make sense, but the 2026 gives you a compelling balance of value and capability right now.
