Chevrolet’s best-selling truck will also become its first fully electric truck when the Silverado EV debuts for the 2024 model year. The Silverado EV will be based on the Ultium Platform first seen in its corporate cousin, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV. The same platform will support the Cadillac Lyriq when it arrives this year. At launch, the Silverado EV will be offered with two trims: the WT, or “Work Truck,” which will initially be exclusive to fleet customers, and the RST First Edition. A Trail Boss version will join the lineup later, likely followed by LT, LTZ, and High Country trims to parallel the gas-powered Silverado’s options. The Silverado EV will come standard with all-wheel drive (AWD) and four-wheel steering. Its two electric motors will combine for 510 horsepower and 615 pound-feet of torque in the WT trim, good for an 8,000-pound towing capacity and a 1,200-pound payload capacity. GM says the RST version will have “up to 664 horsepower” with more than 780 lb-ft of torque when operating in Wide Open Watts mode. It will be able to trailer up to 10,000 pounds and handle a 1,300-pound payload. When the max tow package becomes available, it will boost the top trailering limit to 20,000 pounds. That ought to be enough to quiet anyone’s concerns over an all-electric truck’s capabilities. When it’s not towing, hauling, and trailering, the Silverado EV is expected, per GM estimates, to have a range of 400 miles on a full charge. If you plan to put it to heavy-duty use or you need to travel farther, fear not: Chevy says that the truck’s DC fast charging capabilities will allow you to add another 100 miles of range after just 10 minutes. It’s also possible to use your Silverado EV’s 10.2 kW to power your equipment, another EV, or even your home, assuming you opt for the accessory power bar. The Silverado EV’s 5-foot-11-inch bed and 60/40-split folding rear seats make for full-size-pickup-appropriate cargo space. This will be easier to maximize on the RST First Edition, which will include a Multiflex Midgate, the second coming of the midgate that was popular on the Avalanche. The midgate will also be available on the RST trims to come, not just the First Edition. Crew cab is the sole configuration available for the Silverado EV. Chevy says the shorter front overhang improves visibility, and that the rear seats have been moved back to make them comfortable even for taller adults. Chevrolet maximizes cabin storage with customizable options in the front row. The RST version also has a fixed-glass roof which provides more headroom in addition to the views. An 11-inch touchscreen and 8-inch digital gauge cluster will be standard on the Silverado EV, bumped up to 17 and 11 inches respectively for the top-trim RST. Chevy promises a suite of standard and additional available safety features, though the specifics are not yet public. The fully loaded RST First Edition is due in the fall of 2023 and will launch with an initial MSRP of $105,000, not including delivery fees. The WT’s pre-delivery-fee starting price will be $39,900, and Chevy says that as production ramps up, the truck’s many customization opportunities will allow buyers to option versions in a wide variety of price ranges.
