Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Prius Prime stands out as a plug-in hybrid built around maximum efficiency and value. The test-drive summary calls it the most efficient plug-in hybrid on sale, and it also frames the car as a strong choice for buyers who want to save the most money on gas. That same source also emphasizes Toyota’s long experience with hybrid technology, which helps explain why the Prius Prime is presented as such a confident, economy-first pick.
Its strengths are straightforward: it is fuel-efficient and offers excellent value for money. Those qualities make it appealing to shoppers who care more about minimizing fuel costs than chasing performance. The tradeoff is that the Prius Prime is described as sluggish and as having outdated technology, so its appeal is strongest for buyers who prioritize efficiency and practicality over speed or a cutting-edge cabin.

Surprising... both good and bad. Starting off this car has a ton of features like a heads up display, JBL sound, and a giant touch screen. On the surface all this is pretty cool, but in practice the infotainment system is really awkward and difficult to use. It makes poor use of the space. Generally this Prius has less storage space than our Previous generation of Prius. The good surprises came from unexpected places. The speed and acceleration were much improved. It feels quick and it has a much more quiet ride. They did a good job on insulation . Overall it feels like a good car but quirky.

How much does the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,994 |
| Year-Round Low | $20,498.28 |
| Year-Round High | $22,987.25 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,717 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +5.88% |
Prices are up 5.88% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 231 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $20,498.28, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime a good car?
Generally — the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime earns a 4/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise its efficient performance, impressive hybrid technology, and good fuel economy. The review summary also points to useful features like adaptive cruise control, which fits the car’s efficiency-first mission.
The trade-offs are clear: the infotainment system can be challenging to use, and limited cargo space is a recurring complaint. The overview frames this as a car for you if you care most about minimizing fuel costs rather than chasing speed or a cutting-edge cabin.
With 28.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary points to efficient performance and impressive hybrid technology, and it also suggests that owners value the car’s dependable, useful nature. The expert evaluation reinforces that theme by describing Toyota’s hybrid system as proven and near-perfect, with the car handling long journeys, commutes, and short trips with confidence.
ToyotaCare adds 2 years/25,000 miles of maintenance and 2 years/unlimited miles of roadside assistance, which helps reduce early ownership friction.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the hybrid system and more about aging cabin tech and wear items that can affect day-to-day satisfaction.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Prius Prime?
At 68.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or shows uneven panel gaps, tire wear, or warning lights. Focus on overall condition, because the Prius Prime’s value depends heavily on whether it has been maintained well and kept free of avoidable damage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE skips the larger 11.6-inch touchscreen, while the XLE and Limited get it. The XLE is the best-value choice because it adds the larger touchscreen, navigation, wireless charging, heated front seats, and keyless entry.
- Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid setup is built around efficiency, with 133 MPGe in electric mode, about 25 miles of electric range, and 55 mpg city / 53 highway / 54 combined once the battery is depleted. It is not quick, but it is tuned for quiet, seamless operation and strong fuel savings.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense features forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring is included only on the Limited.
- Infotainment: The touchscreen measures 11.6 inches on the XLE and Limited, but it is unavailable on the base LE. Wireless charging is included on the XLE, and the system supports Apple CarPlay.
- Fuel efficiency: The car is rated at 55 mpg city, 53 highway, and 54 combined after the battery is depleted, and 133 MPGe in electric mode.
Which 2020 Toyota Prius Prime trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Prius Prime is offered in 3 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, but it leaves out the larger 11.6-inch touchscreen, so it makes the most sense only if you want the lowest starting price and can live with the simpler setup.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim. It adds the larger touchscreen, navigation, wireless charging, heated front seats, and keyless entry, making it the smartest pick for most shoppers.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the most equipment, including blind-spot monitoring and the nicer convenience touches, and you are willing to pay more for them.
Blind-spot monitoring is included only on the Limited.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Prius Prime?
Act selectively, because this is still a seller’s market even though there are some decent opportunities if you shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 231 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 5.88% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 68.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,498.28, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime's resale value?
The current average of $22,994 sits slightly above last year's $21,717.
That price movement suggests the Prius Prime has held demand well, which is a good sign if you plan to sell later. Rising prices can support resale value in the near term, especially for a model that buyers already seek out for efficiency and low running costs.
The market also appears to reward the car’s value proposition, which can help keep it attractive to future shoppers. If you maintain it well and keep the history clean, you should have a stronger case when it is time to trade or sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime safe?
It earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, and the otherwise identical Prius was a 2019 Top Safety Pick from IIHS. In NHTSA testing, it received four-star ratings for both driver and passenger in a head-on frontal crash, and two-star ratings in the pole test.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Prius Prime or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 5.88% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 adds a center rear seat and keeps the model’s efficiency-first, value-focused formula.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,643, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $22,994 average.
- It adds a better standard equipment package and standard advanced safety features.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest efficiency-and-value play, the 2020 is still a smart buy, especially if you find a clean, well-priced example. If you are price-sensitive and want a slightly cheaper alternative with more standard equipment, the 2021 is worth a look.
