CarGurus Analysis: 2020 BMW 5 Series

Summary
With 212 currently listed for sale and an average price of $27,165, 49.5% of 2020 BMW 5 Series listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 BMW 5 Series 5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2020 BMW 5 Series sits in the G30 generation, which had already moved the model toward a more comfortable luxury-sedan character without giving up its performance roots. By this point, BMW offered a broad range of powertrains, including the 530i, 540i, 530e plug-in hybrid, 540d diesel, and M550i xDrive, so buyers could choose between efficiency, all-weather traction, and stronger straight-line performance. The 530i used a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the 540i used a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six with 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The M550i xDrive brought a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 with 456 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque, making it the most performance-focused regular 5 Series in the lineup.
The 2020 model year also benefited from the G30’s strong safety and technology content. Every model came standard with blind spot monitoring, lane departure warnings with lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alerts, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beams, while some of BMW’s best systems remained optional. Reviewers generally liked the car, but many noted that the steering and suspension in the 530i, 540d, and 540i did not feel as engaging as older 5 Series models and that the car felt heavy. Even so, the 2020 5 Series remained appealing as a refined, well-equipped midsize luxury sedan with real performance credibility and a better reliability record than the earlier F10 generation.

I was skeptical on the power of the M550 since Im coming from a boosted mustang, but the acceleration impresses me. Lots of cool features, too many if you ask me. Remote start is missing from the 2020 and older M550s.

How much does the 2020 BMW 5 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $25,292 |
| Year-Round Low | $24,758 |
| Year-Round High | $27,426 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,200 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.02% |
Prices have softened 7.02% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,166 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
Is the 2020 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. The 2020 5 Series sits in the G30 generation, which had already shifted toward a more comfortable luxury-sedan character without abandoning its performance roots. You also get a broad range of powertrains, so you can prioritize efficiency, all-weather traction, or stronger straight-line performance depending on the version you choose. For shoppers who want a refined, well-equipped midsize luxury sedan with real performance credibility, it fits that brief well. There are 39.2% of listings priced as good or great deals, which gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview also points to a better reliability record than the earlier F10 generation, which is encouraging if you want a used luxury sedan with fewer worries than some older BMWs. Even so, you should still expect normal used-car maintenance and pay close attention to service history, because premium sedans can become expensive if prior care was inconsistent. For long-term ownership, the safest path is a well-documented example with clean maintenance records.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 5 Series?
At 69.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report on every candidate and confirm whether any damage was cosmetic or structural. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on bodywork quality, panel alignment, tire wear, and signs of uneven repair. Because this is a luxury sedan with multiple powertrain choices, condition and maintenance history matter more than mileage alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 5 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 39.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,166 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.02% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,758, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $25,292 sits slightly below last year's $27,200.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, the same trend means resale upside may be more limited unless you buy well, keep the car in excellent condition, and choose a desirable configuration. Strong maintenance records and clean history should matter a lot when it comes time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 39.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.02% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $28,838, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $25,292 average.
- The refresh adds a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and a bigger infotainment touchscreen.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and meaningful inventory. If you’re willing to pay more for a fresher feel and updated tech, the 2021 is the better secondary path for price-sensitive buyers who still want a newer setup.
