How much does the 2019 Volvo XC40 cost?

Prices have softened 11.28% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 301 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.

Is the 2019 Volvo XC40 a good car?

Yes — the 2019 Volvo XC40 earns a 4.67/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating, which points to broad appeal for shoppers who want a premium-feeling small SUV.

The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Form and function.

Owners consistently praise its excellent safety features, ample power, and luxurious feel, and they also call out its standout design and performance. The XC40’s upscale styling and clever cargo solutions fit especially well if you want a subcompact SUV that feels more premium than its size suggests. On the downside, the transmission can be irritating and the touchscreen-heavy interface can be complicated, so it suits you best if you value style, safety, and everyday usefulness more than a simple control layout.

37.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2019 Volvo XC40 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, with praise for its safety, power, and luxurious character. The expert review also describes the XC40 as a standout vehicle that offers a tremendous amount of car for the price, which supports the idea that it can be a solid long-term choice if you buy carefully. Volvo’s ownership approach also emphasizes convenience, with a subscription-style setup that can simplify the experience for some buyers.

The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that the transmission and visibility issues can affect day-to-day confidence, so a thorough test drive matters.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volvo XC40?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean title alone does not tell you how the vehicle was maintained or repaired. Prioritize a close inspection of the transmission behavior, rear visibility, and touchscreen operation, since those are the areas most likely to affect your ownership experience. It also makes sense to focus on how the car feels in normal driving, because the XC40’s strengths are tied to its premium character and everyday usability.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Momentum trim is technically the base, but it comes well equipped with 18-inch wheels, integrated bright aluminum roof rails, LED signature headlights with the “Thor’s Hammer” design, a leather steering wheel and shift knob, power windows and doors, and the large 9-inch Sensus touchscreen infotainment display. The R-Design adds a unique front grille, contrasting black roof, integrated dual tailpipes, a sport steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a charcoal headliner, and ambient interior lighting. The Inscription adds unique badging, a panoramic sunroof, driftwood door inlays, and an Orrefors crystal gearshift knob.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with standard all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic. The XC40 offers brisk acceleration, well-weighted steering, responsive turn-in, and a suspension that balances comfort and control.
• Safety package: The XC40 comes standard with a full array of airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, a whiplash protection system, road-sign information updates, a rear-collision warning system, and City Safe automatic braking that can detect cars, pedestrians, and large animals. The Vision Package adds blind-spot detection, cross-traffic alert, and Pilot Assist with adaptive cruise control. The Advanced Package adds a 360-degree camera, LED foglights with a cornering function, and automatically bending headlights.
• Infotainment: The XC40 uses a large 9-inch Sensus touchscreen in portrait orientation. Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work seamlessly with the system, and the interface also supports an available navigation system. The screen-based setup can be confusing at first, but the home screen and home button help make it easier to use.
• Fuel efficiency: The XC40 is rated at 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.

Which 2019 Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2019 Volvo XC40 is offered in 3 trim levels: Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the best-value choice if you want the XC40’s core strengths without stretching the budget. It already includes the 9-inch Sensus touchscreen, LED signature headlights, roof rails, and the leather steering wheel and shift knob, so you get the premium basics that define the model.
• R-Design: Choose this if you want a sportier look and a more upscale cabin feel. It adds the unique grille, black roof, dual tailpipes, sport steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, charcoal headliner, and ambient lighting, making it the most style-forward middle ground.
• Inscription: Pick this if you want the most luxurious presentation. The panoramic sunroof, driftwood inlays, crystal gearshift knob, and unique badging give it the richest feel in the lineup.

The safety package is a strong point across the range, and the Vision Package and Advanced Package add meaningful driver-assistance and visibility upgrades if you find them on a used example.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volvo XC40?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you know what you want.

• Deal availability: 37.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 301 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.28% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 79.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,651, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Volvo XC40's resale value?

The current average of $18,651 sits slightly below last year's $21,021.

That decline suggests the XC40 has become more affordable for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy at today’s lower average, you may have less downside risk than someone who bought when prices were higher. The model’s premium image and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand, but condition and equipment will still matter a lot when it comes time to resell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Volvo XC40 safe?

The 2019 Volvo XC40 earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes standard with a full array of airbags, tire pressure monitoring, whiplash protection, road-sign information updates, rear-collision warning, and City Safe automatic braking that can detect cars, pedestrians, and large animals. The Vision Package adds blind-spot detection, cross-traffic alert, and Pilot Assist with adaptive cruise control, while the Advanced Package adds a 360-degree camera, LED foglights with a cornering function, and automatically bending headlights.

The main safety caveat is visibility: the massive C-pillars create huge blind spots and poor rearward visibility, and the transmission design adds another layer of concern in everyday use.

Should I buy a 2019 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 37.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.28% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2019 XC40 stands out for bringing Volvo’s upscale style, advanced technology, and premium feel into a more affordable subcompact SUV package.

The bottom line: If you want the XC40’s distinctive design, strong safety reputation, and premium character at a lower used price, the 2019 is a smart place to start. If you’re especially price-sensitive, shop carefully for the best-condition example you can find and prioritize a clean history report, because the transmission and visibility concerns make condition more important than mileage alone.
