CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Hyundai Kona
overall

Summary
With 568 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,047, 32.9% of 2018 Hyundai Kona listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Hyundai Kona 4.67 / 5 stars.
65.3% of 2018 Hyundai Kona listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Hyundai Kona stood out in the subcompact SUV class with styling that was meant to be distinctive, a turbocharged engine option paired with a dual-clutch automatic transmission, and a generous amount of equipment for the money. It also offered all-wheel drive, which was optional rather than standard. That combination gave the Kona a more characterful personality than many small crossovers, while still keeping its appeal rooted in value and available performance.
For 2018, the Kona came with a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that made 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, along with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The base model included features such as a 3.5-inch screen in the instrument cluster, air conditioning, keyless entry, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment screen. Buyers who wanted more traction could choose all-wheel drive, which added a rear suspension system and a locking center differential that kept power split 50/50 front to rear on loose surfaces.
Higher trims broadened the Kona’s appeal with more comfort, technology, and safety equipment. The Kona SEL added 17-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, satellite radio, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Kona Limited brought 18-inch wheels, LED lights, leather upholstery, and a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with 175 horsepower and a dual-clutch gearbox. At the top, the Kona Ultimate added Blue Link smartphone connectivity, a head-up display, an eight-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless phone charging, an Infinity premium audio system, and Smart Sense safety features including forward collision warning and mitigation, lane keeping assist, and automatic high beams. The main drawback was that the base engine was fairly pedestrian, but the 2018 Kona still offered a strong mix of personality, available turbocharged performance, and useful technology.

Very good performance, good features (auto-climate control, small size, phone conectivity).

Id compare this car to a Crosstrek. It feels solid and responsive has enough room for an adult passenger with a car seat in the back. Its a great value for the price which may be why I had trouble finding one that fit me. The crash ratings are also reassuring. The sport mode gives you some nice boost when/if needed and makes everything feel better while on the road. The lane assist is taking a little bit to get used to as it nudges steering to keep within the lines.

Very nice small SUV. Handled well while test driving. Decent pep while accelerating on highway.

Is the 2018 Hyundai Kona a good car?
Yes — the 4.67/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction for this model year. The 2018 Kona stood out in the subcompact SUV class with distinctive styling, a generous amount of equipment for the money, and available all-wheel drive, so you get a small crossover that leans more toward personality and value than anonymity. It also offered a turbocharged engine option for buyers who wanted more performance. With 32.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance to find a competitively priced example.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Kona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2018 Kona’s appeal comes from its mix of value, available performance, and useful equipment, which can make it feel like a well-rounded used buy if the specific vehicle has been cared for properly. Because this is a used model-year purchase, your long-term ownership risk depends heavily on maintenance history and how the vehicle was driven and serviced before you take it home.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Hyundai Kona?
At 65.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was minor or more serious. Put inspection priority on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of uneven wear, then make sure the drivetrain, brakes, and electronics all work as expected. Since the Kona’s value proposition depends on getting a lot of equipment for the money, you’ll want to focus on overall condition rather than just trim level.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Hyundai Kona?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 566 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.49% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,297, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Hyundai Kona's resale value?
The current average of $13,022 sits slightly below last year's $13,355.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may also mean future resale gains are limited unless you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition. If you plan to sell later, a clean history and good maintenance records should matter a lot because they help protect demand when shoppers compare similar used examples. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest value play, the 2018 is a sensible starting point because it combines a lower average price with solid owner satisfaction and a decent pool of listings. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep an eye out for the best-deal listings and prioritize condition and history over trim upgrades, since that’s where you’re most likely to find the best used-car value.
