What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volkswagen Jetta?

At 49.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the equipment on the car matches the trim you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S trim includes LED daytime running lights, fog lights, heated side mirrors, and a reversing camera, but it also comes with 16-inch steel wheels, a 4-speaker stereo, and a 5-inch touchscreen. The SE adds pleather upholstery, keyless entry and ignition, a sunroof, a 6.3-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Sport adds the 1.8-liter engine, sport suspension, rear spoiler, heated seats, navigation, 17-inch alloys, push-button start, and unique leather upholstery. The SEL adds a forward-collision warning system with auto braking, adaptive cruise, navigation, an upgraded 6-speaker stereo, rain-sensing wipers, a power driver’s seat, and dual-zone auto climate control. The GLI adds a 2.0-liter turbo engine, sport suspension, sport seats, 18-inch alloys, upgraded brakes, parking sensors front and rear, and a 9-speaker Fender stereo, but it deletes some driver-assistance features.
• Powertrain: The 1.4-liter turbo makes 150 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque and returns 28 mpg city, 38 highway, 32 combined. The 1.8-liter engine increases output to 170 hp and is rated at 25 mpg city, 35 highway, 29 combined. The 2.0-liter turbo delivers 210 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque, with 27 mpg city, 33 highway, 27 combined when paired with the DSG.
• Safety package: Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert appears on the SE, while the SEL adds forward-collision warning with auto braking and adaptive cruise. The Sport trim has no advanced safety systems, and the GLI deletes adaptive cruise and forward-collision warning with auto braking.
• Infotainment: The base S trim gets a 5-inch touchscreen, while the SE and above move to a 6.3-inch system with VW App-Connect, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The GLI adds a 9-speaker Fender stereo.
• Fuel efficiency: The 1.4-liter turbo is rated at 28 mpg city, 38 highway, 32 combined. The 1.8-liter engine is rated at 25 mpg city, 35 highway, 29 combined, and the 2.0-liter turbo is rated at 27 mpg city, 33 highway, 27 combined.

Which 2017 Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?

The 2017 Volkswagen Jetta is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, Sport, SEL, GLI.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value-focused starting point, and it already includes LED daytime running lights, fog lights, heated side mirrors, a reversing camera, air conditioning, cruise control, and full power accessories. It’s the trim to consider if you want the lowest entry price and can live with the basic stereo and smaller touchscreen.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds pleather upholstery, keyless entry and ignition, a sunroof, a larger touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. It gives you the biggest jump in everyday convenience and tech without moving too far up the price ladder.
• Sport: This trim is for you if you want the 1.8-liter engine and a more athletic setup, including a sport suspension, rear spoiler, heated seats, navigation, 17-inch alloys, push-button start, and unique leather upholstery. It’s more characterful, but it gives up some comfort and safety content.
• SEL: Choose this if you want the most complete mix of comfort and driver assistance, including forward-collision warning with auto braking, adaptive cruise, navigation, rain-sensing wipers, a power driver’s seat, and dual-zone automatic climate control. It’s the most well-rounded upper trim, though it costs more.
• GLI: This is the performance-oriented choice, with the 2.0-liter turbo engine, sport suspension, upgraded brakes, 18-inch alloys, parking sensors, and a premium audio system. It’s the one to buy if you care most about power and sportier hardware, but it omits some advanced safety features.

The safety-package trim note is simple: the Sport deletes advanced safety systems, and the GLI also leaves out adaptive cruise and forward-collision warning with auto braking.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volkswagen Jetta?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 837 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.77% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 49.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,874, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?

The current average of $10,324 sits slightly below last year's $10,510.

That modest decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can work against sellers trying to maximize return. If you’re planning to sell later, pricing competitively will matter, especially because shoppers have enough inventory to compare.

The good news is that the Jetta’s broad appeal as an efficient, easy-to-live-with compact sedan should help it stay relevant with used buyers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.82/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta safe?

The Jetta earns top marks from both IIHS and NHTSA, including a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, though its total front impact tests received a four-star rating.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety suite includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert on the SE, plus forward-collision warning with auto braking and adaptive cruise on the SEL. Standard equipment also includes a reversing camera, and the base car benefits from strong braking performance.

One important caveat is that the Sport trim deletes advanced safety systems, and the GLI also drops adaptive cruise and forward-collision warning with auto braking. That makes trim choice especially important if safety tech is a priority for you.

Should I buy a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 49.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.77% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.82/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 brings a mild trim shakeup, a standard reversing camera on all trims, and a stronger safety-feature spread than the prior year.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $9,178, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,324 average.
• It adds a new 1.4-liter turbo engine that improves performance and fuel economy.

The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped sixth-generation Jetta with a standard reversing camera and a strong mix of value and safety, the 2017 is the better pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly alternative and still brings meaningful mechanical improvements.
