CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Toyota Tacoma
overall

Summary
With 243 currently listed for sale near Columbia, SC and an average price of $26,675, 38.7% of 2016 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota Tacoma 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
74.5% of 2016 Tacoma models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a redesigned midsize pickup that was built to keep its long-running lead in a segment with growing competition. It can be configured 29 different ways, and buyers can choose between two cab styles: the extended Access Cab or the 4-door Double Cab. Each is available with rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive, giving the Tacoma a broad range of setups for shoppers who want a truck that is easier to live with than a full-size pickup.
What has long made the Tacoma distinctive is its appeal to off-roaders, outdoor enthusiasts, and professionals who want capability without the bulk of a larger truck. Its reputation is built on capability, reliability, and predictability, and owners also commonly praise its reliability, resale value, and long-lasting performance. At the same time, some buyers have noted concerns about pricing, minor issues, and interior storage, so the Tacoma’s strengths are balanced by a few practical drawbacks.

Sleek styling. 4x4, long bed, 6 cylinder. It has “go” power. 4 doors makes it comfortable for passengers.

Toyota are great mid-size trucks that last forever however, I'm only 6ft and I had a hard time fitting in the truck.

We purchased the 2016 Tacoma. We had running boards added as part of the purchase. The storage compartments are of good size. The phone sync and navigation systems were easy to set up. The manual was easy to follow. It is a nice ride.

The Tacoma’s broad setup range, including Access Cab and Double Cab body styles, makes it useful for shoppers who want a truck that can be tailored to work, outdoor use, or everyday driving.
30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to reliability, long-lasting performance, and a truck that many drivers feel they can count on over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes capability, reliability, and predictability, which reinforces the Tacoma’s reputation as a dependable used pickup.
The Tacoma’s durability story is helped by its revised structure and the brand’s focus on long-term toughness, and the cost-effectiveness notes suggest it is not likely to surprise you with unusual problems or unexpected major repairs. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is paying a premium for a truck that may still need careful inspection because of age, mileage, and prior use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?
At 60.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used off road or for towing. Focus on body condition, underbody wear, and signs of hard use, since those are the areas most likely to reveal how the truck was treated. If you are comparing multiple listings, give extra weight to trucks with cleaner histories and better-documented maintenance.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup starts with the SR and continues to the SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited. The SR and SR5 use fabric-trimmed seats, while the TRD versions add unique upholstery and the Limited gets premium leather. The SR5 also adds a 6.1-inch touchscreen and Scout GPS Link, while the TRD trims step up to a 7-inch touchscreen and more advanced audio features.
- Powertrain: You can choose a carried-over 2.7-liter 4-cylinder or a new 3.5-liter V6. The V6 makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, and it is described as more powerful and efficient. Either engine can be paired with a new 6-speed automatic, while manuals are a 5-speed for the 4-cylinder and a 6-speed for the V6.
- Safety package: The Tacoma carries the Toyota Star Safety System™, which includes vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. It also includes driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts are mentioned among available premium features.
- Infotainment: SR models get Entune audio, SR5 models add Entune Audio Plus with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and Scout GPS Link, and TRD models get Entune Premium Audio with a 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, and an App Suite. The tech package also includes Bluetooth hands-free integration, audio streaming, Siri® Eyes Free, touchscreen controls, and voice recognition.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4-cylinder is rated at 19 mpg city/23 highway/21 combined with RWD, while the V6 is rated at 19/24 with RWD and 18/23 with 4WD. The TRD 4WD Off-Road tested here returned 18 mpg city/23 highway.
Which 2016 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 5 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the work-focused starting point, with fabric seats, standard 4-way front seats, and Entune audio. It makes sense if you want the Tacoma’s core capability without paying for extra comfort or tech.
- SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds Entune Audio Plus, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, and Scout GPS Link while staying below the TRD models. If you want a more livable daily driver without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the trim to target.
- TRD Sport: This trim moves you into the TRD family with Entune Premium Audio, a 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, and an App Suite. It suits you if you want more tech and a more upscale feel than the SR5.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the choice if you want the most off-road-focused setup in the lineup. It adds extra skidplates, Bilstein suspension dampers, crawl control, Multi-terrain Select, and an off-road-tuned suspension.
- Limited: This is the range-topper, with premium leather and the Entune Premium JBL Audio system. It fits you best if comfort and features matter more than value.
The safety content notes that crash scores were not yet available for this model year, so it is worth weighing the Tacoma’s standard safety equipment carefully against that gap.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to shop carefully and compare listings.
- Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,276 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.40% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,332, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $24,185 sits slightly below last year's $24,528.
That modest decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now than you could a year ago. For a future seller, the Tacoma’s pricing pattern still points to strong retention relative to many used trucks, especially because demand remains supported by its reputation and broad shopper appeal. If you maintain the truck well and keep documentation, you are more likely to preserve value when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma does not yet have crash-test scores listed in the provided data, so the strongest safety takeaway is its standard equipment. It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Tacoma includes the Toyota Star Safety System™, with vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. It also includes driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests for the front seats. Available 4WD features such as Multi-terrain Select and Crawl Control add confidence when conditions get rough.
Because crash-test results are not listed here, you should place extra weight on the truck’s standard safety hardware and on the condition of the specific vehicle you are considering.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.40% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 brings a redesigned body, more tech, and a stronger, more efficient V6 than the previous generation.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $20,703, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $24,185 average.
- It is a rugged, off-road-focused final-year truck with a clear purpose for buyers who value capability over modern tech.
The bottom line: If you want the more modern Tacoma with better tech, broader trim choice, and stronger everyday appeal, the 2016 is the better default pick. If your priority is spending less and you are comfortable with an older, more specialized truck, the 2015 is the value-oriented alternative.
