How much does the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee cost?

Prices have softened 8.33% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 3,312 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, performance, and luxurious features, and many also like the spacious interior and powerful Hemi engine. That lines up with the overview: you’re looking at an SUV that appeals if you want towing ability, off-pavement capability, and a distinctive Jeep presence. It’s also a vehicle that asks you to accept some compromise in exchange for those strengths.

Good and great deals account for 31.8% of listings, so you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to comfort, performance, and a luxurious feel, while also describing the SUV as a strong fit for everyday use and rugged adventures. The expert notes also emphasize that the Grand Cherokee is built for capability and can handle serious off-road use when properly equipped, which reinforces the sense that it’s a vehicle designed for demanding ownership. Jeep also improved the 2016 powertrain setup with updated efficiency features and an automatic engine stop/start system, which helps support day-to-day usability.

At the same time, the expert commentary warns that reliability predictions are unimpressive, so you should be especially careful about maintenance history and overall condition when shopping used.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

At 59.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a full vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible wear. Focus on how the SUV drives, how the cabin has aged, and whether any prior damage was repaired cleanly. Because this model is often bought for capability and image, condition matters a lot more than just the badge on the hood.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Jeep sells this SUV in Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT model series. The lineup spans from more basic versions to a more upscale Overland and a track-ready SRT, so base trims will feel less equipped than the higher-end models.
• Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 295 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and an optional 5.7-liter V8 is available if you want maximum towing capacity. Jeep also improved fuel economy for 2016 with updated variable valve timing, automatic engine stop/start, electric steering, aluminum suspension components, and low-rolling-resistance tires.
• Safety package: The optional Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. It is a pricey upgrade.
• Infotainment: Uconnect uses an 8.4-inch color touchscreen in Overland models, and for 2016 it adds Siri Eyes Free and Do Not Disturb functions. The system is easy to use, though the navigation and connected services feel dated.
• Fuel efficiency: Official fuel economy estimates rise to 21 mpg combined, and the test vehicle averaged 18.7 mpg. The optional diesel V6 returned 22.9 mpg in a prior test.

Which 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 5 trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT.

Here's the short version:

• Laredo: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Grand Cherokee’s core capability and styling at the lowest starting point. It is the trim most likely to leave you wanting more equipment if you care about luxury or tech.
• Limited: This is the better everyday choice if you want a more balanced mix of features and value. It should be the first trim you compare closely if you want comfort without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• Overland: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a more upscale feel, and the test vehicle’s 8.4-inch touchscreen and available safety package show how much more polished it can feel.
• Summit: Choose this if you want the most luxury-oriented version of the standard lineup. It is the trim for buyers who care most about premium presentation.
• SRT: This is the performance-focused choice, with track-ready intent right from the showroom floor. It suits you only if on-road performance matters more than everyday value.

The safety package is optional, so if driver-assistance features matter to you, make sure the specific listing includes the Advanced Technology package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,312 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.33% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 59.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,027, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee's resale value?

The current average of $13,027 sits slightly below last year's $14,210.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also limit near-term upside if you plan to resell soon. If you’re a future seller, the softer pricing means condition, mileage, and equipment will matter even more when it comes time to list. Well-kept examples with desirable features should still stand out, but you should not expect a strong appreciation story from this model year.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?

The 2016 Grand Cherokee does not meet the criteria for a Top Safety Pick nomination from IIHS because of a Marginal rating in the small overlap frontal impact test.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The optional Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. That package meaningfully improves the SUV’s safety equipment, but it is not standard. The lack of a Top Safety Pick result is the main caveat you should keep in mind when comparing used examples.

Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.33% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It offers strong towing, off-road ability, and a more polished feel than many rivals.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $11,657, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $13,027 average.
• It offers a capable, comfortable setup with broad trim and engine choice.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $14,214, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $13,027 average.
• It leans harder into upscale appeal while keeping the Grand Cherokee’s rugged identity.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price and capability, the 2016 is the smart middle ground. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2015 can save you money, while the 2017 makes sense if you want to spend more for a newer-feeling alternative.
