Why it stands out
The 2016 Dodge Durango stands out by offering rear-wheel drive and serious towing capacity in a market dominated by crossovers. That combination gives it a more truck-like character than many family-oriented rivals, and it helps explain why the Durango remains one of the stronger choices for buyers who want utility with a bit more attitude.
For 2016, Dodge added several updates aimed at sharpening the Durango’s appeal. Every trim gets fresh wheels, four additional exterior color options, and a Sport driving mode that quickens steering and throttle response while holding gears longer. The R/T trim also gains new 20-inch wheels, ventilated and heated Nappa leather seats, a heated power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, an 8-way power passenger seat, auto wipers, HID headlights, and navigation with an 8.4-inch touchscreen. Anodized Platinum and Brass Monkey appearance packages are also available for the Citadel and Limited trims.
There are still practical strengths behind the styling changes. A standard stop/start feature helps improve efficiency with the V6, while the Durango’s overall formula remains appealing for shoppers who want capability and a distinctive presence.

The features are GREAT !!! I am still trying to learn them all but I am having a hard time finding the power folding exterior windows. It should also have power folding rear seating. Great vehicle, the view from the driver seat is great if you are a short person.

The expert notes also point to strong towing ability and a powertrain lineup that gives you a clear step up if you want the V8. If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is that a heavier, more capability-focused SUV can mean more wear on components over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Dodge Durango?
At 62.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you get too far into the process, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if the listing has any accident or repair history. Focus on overall condition, especially signs of hard use, because this model’s capability-oriented setup can make wear more important than mileage alone. If you’re comparing multiple examples, the cleanest maintenance records and the most consistent cosmetic condition should rise to the top.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SXT includes 18-inch alloys, heated mirrors, auto headlights, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, keyless ignition and entry, a load-leveling rear suspension, cruise control, 3-row climate controls, fog lamps, and the Uconnect system with a 5-inch touchscreen. It can be upgraded to the larger Uconnect 8.4 screen, voice controls, satellite radio, emergency telematics, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The Limited adds remote ignition, auto-dimming power-folding mirrors, leather, 6-way power for the passenger seat, heat for the second row, LED running lights, driver memory settings, and a secondary USB charge port. The Citadel adds more chrome, additional leather, upgraded brakes, new 20-inch wheels, 8-way power for the front passenger seat, front-seat ventilation, and a 9-speaker stereo. The R/T adds a sport suspension, unique body-color trim, Nappa leather, performance steering tuning, and the Beats stereo, but it gives up roof rails and the sunroof unless you add them back.
- Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 290 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. With rear-wheel drive and the 8-speed automatic, it reaches 60 mph in a little under 8 seconds, while all-wheel drive takes a little over 8 seconds. It returns 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, and it can tow up to 6,200 pounds. The R/T’s 5.7-liter V8 makes 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque, reaches 60 mph in around 6 seconds, and can tow up to 7,400 pounds. Its fuel economy is 14 mpg city and 22 mpg highway, with a 17 mpg combined rating.
- Safety package: The Safety/Security & Convenience Group adds blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, auto HID headlights and wipers, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and a cargo cover with net. The Technology Group adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning and avoidance, plus blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert. Those features are not standard on the lower trims.
- Infotainment: The Uconnect 8.4 system uses an 8.4-inch touchscreen. It adds voice controls, satellite radio, emergency telematics, a customizable drag-and-drop menu bar, Siri Eyes Free, and Do Not Disturb. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 returns 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, while the V8 returns 14 mpg city and 22 mpg highway with a 17 mpg combined rating.
Which 2016 Dodge Durango trim should I buy?
The 2016 Dodge Durango is offered in 5 trim levels: SXT, Limited, Citadel, R/T, and GT.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SXT gives you the core Durango experience, but it still leaves some desirable safety and convenience features on the options list. If you want the most affordable entry point, this is it, but you’ll likely want to add packages for the better tech and driver-assistance gear.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Limited is the best compromise for flair and features. It adds remote ignition, more leather, power adjustments, and available navigation and power liftgate features, while still keeping the Durango’s distinctive character.
- Premium/top trim: The Citadel is the most complete everyday choice if you want more luxury touches, more standard-feeling comfort, and the strongest blend of equipment without moving into the sport-focused R/T.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims are presented as an off-road-focused choice here.
The Safety/Security & Convenience Group is the key safety-package note to keep in mind, especially because it is not available on the SXT.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Dodge Durango?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 882 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.90% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,483.55, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Dodge Durango's resale value?
The current average of $13,748 sits slightly below last year's $14,457.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point if you plan to keep the vehicle for a while. For a future seller, the current trend means there may be less upside than in a rising market, so condition and trim choice matter more when it comes time to resell. Stronger-equipped examples should be easier to move than neglected ones, especially if they have clean history and desirable features.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Dodge Durango safe?
The Durango’s 4-wheel antilock discs, stability, traction, and trailer sway control, plus a full suite of airbags including front side, driver knee, and full-length curtain airbags garnered it a four-star safety rating in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests, with side impacts getting five-star ratings. Independent evaluations achieved top ratings in all tests, plus the lower sport suspension in the R/T should make rollovers less likely.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Durango includes a safety package with blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert, but those features are not standard across the lineup. The expert notes also point out that some of the most useful driver-assistance tech is kept on the options list, especially for lower trims.
Should I buy a 2016 Dodge Durango or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.90% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds fresh wheels, more exterior colors, and a Sport driving mode that sharpens response.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $14,854, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $13,748 average.
- It offers a more refined-feeling cabin with a broader move from basic to well equipped.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2016 is the smarter starting point because prices have eased and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model-year alternative, the 2017 is the cleaner upgrade path, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2016’s stronger market position.
